I say screw all this "they don't owe the fans anything" crap. Heck, yeah, they owe the fans EVERYTHING. If it wasn't for the fans who make the programs possible, most of these guys would be working minimum wage jobs out of high school.

Show up and play as a show of appreciation to the folks who spend their hard-earned money to give you a platform to showcase your skills.

"Rewards for me but no gratitude to thee" is the unbelievable mindset of some college athletes today.
When you are blessed and you know it (and even if you don't), always give thanks for your blessings!
How about “I Don’t want to get wrecked today…So I actually get paid to play”.

some of y’all. I tell you

Wonder why 3 of the men whose numbers shine brightly in our stadium didn't have that philosophy?

Rogers: #1 overall draft pick, played his final game in the Gator Bowl
Sharpe: #7 overall draft pick, played his final game in the Gator Bowl
Clowney: #1 overall draft pick, played his final game in the Citrus Bowl

We have players quitting who might very well not even get drafted & will get a possible free agent invite. Time will tell. Smith will be drafted. Not sure about Rush & Pickens.

Isn't that what insurance is for? If you are that worried about getting hurt, why would any 5* high school player ever play a down of college football?
Because you have to be 3 years removed from high school. Most aren’t physically ready at 18. The guys that opt out have already proven what they are. They’ll get draft grades and they have the combine. Which if they get hurt in a bowl game the combine is out.

One game insurance is probably dirt cheap!
Yeah so you collect a couple million but never get to play football because you wrecked your knee, back, arm etc. so you only lose out on a possible 20 or 30 on a second contract.

Why don't the 5*s just work out with the trainers for three years and then go to the combine? ( I hope that you get that I'm just playing a little devil's advocate with you) I get why some may not want to play in the bowl, but where does it all stop? Have a good freshman year and then sit out two years and wait for the combine - kind of like the media wanted Clowney to do after his sophomore year?

Bingo….if there were no fans, there would be no money. The numbers that play for the love of the game is dwindling. The ballers are the ones who would play if no fans were watching.

Can you provide a list of players who suffered CAREER-ENDING injury in their final bowl game?

Now now…don’t throw stuff back at people to make them have to think. I am thinking about having my grandson stop in jr high to avoid messing up his contract. Maybe players should skip their junior and senior years of high school to avoid losing out on NIL or scholarship money. Oh wait, those 100k per year scholarships don’t count I have been told.

I have no issue with a player declaring for the draft to drop out of a mid or low tier bowl game. If we were in the CFP I'd feel differently, but not for these games. Next man up! Let's go COCKS!

I especially understand those going to play and show out in the Senior bowl such as Darius Rush! Good Luck Darius!! Thanks for being a great team player!

Careful, there is one poster in another thread that did find a former Michigan player that was a higher draft pick who got injured pretty good in his last bowl game. They left out the guy had a $5 mil insurance policy that paid if his draft status was affected. Also, pay no attention to the fact that player is still in the NFL. I can’t fathom leaving my team if I am healthy until the final whistle.

So I guess I am old enough to yell at clouds it seems.

It started with just a few stars sitting out. Now anyone that wont be returning the following season seems to be considering skipping.

Next, players are going to skip the season all together.

Do you not remember the posters on fgf suggesting Clowney should skip his junior year and wait on the draft?

What if they suffer a career ending injury at the combine? Might consider opting out of that also.

Oops landed awkwardly after that jump! Career BUSTED.
Exactly! Life in a bubble is needed for potential pro football players. At what point in life does this start?
Avoid stairs, cars, planes, elevators, dogs, serial killers, drunken sailors, bar fights, etc.

The VAST majority of "NFL players" will never make $20m over the course of their careers, and for most of those that do, that amount of money is so far down the road for them that it seems premature to be scared of playing in a game now.

Apples to Oranges. The first players to sit out bowl games occurred in 2016. Players weren't sitting out bowl games when Rogers, Sharpe and Clowney played. If those guys played today, they may very well have sat out, too.

Which points directly to this:
Just a symptom of our society and the younger generation in general. Sad

You are really saying they had less at stake? They could have sat out worrying about their NFL futures, but didn't. They were men & fulfilled their commitments. Horrible take you just made!

I think you may have underscored the OP's point.

Isn't that kind of like saying if the Greatest Generation had been around today and formulated their world view based on social media, they may very well have not been the heroes they were? Fact is, they were born when they were, they did what they did, and that's why we thank them.
