The recent series of diagrams that Flo has been putting out for the # of AAs per school per weight over the last 25 years got me interested in taking a deeper look at the history of the different weights. Specifically, comparing Cael's 16 years (15 years of NCAA tourneys) to the prior 15 years before him. I'm starting with Penn State's best weight class (in terms of NCAA scoring) during the Cael Era - 174.

To set the stage:
>Points are adjusted to today's scoring
>Since weight classes changed in 1999, I'm using data for the 167 weight class from 1995-1998
>On the charts within the bars are the # of National Champions, All-Americans and NCAA Qualifiers for that time period. For the Cael Era, I included the NQs for the cancelled COVID tourney

The first chart below shows Penn State's absolute dominance at 174 since Cael has come to town. Penn State did miss qualifying a wrestler in Cael's first year but 174 is Penn State's longest active streak for qualifying at 15 years in a row. Notably, Oklahoma State and anOSU are the only schools to qualify a wrestler all 16 years (more on that later). Zahid Valencia single-handedly dragged Arizona State onto the list, edging out Illinois to make the top 10.

The second chart shows 167/174 for the 15 years prior to Cael arriving at Penn State. Otherwise know as BCE - Before the Cael Era. Notably, Penn State didn't make the top 10 during this time period. They did have a NC in Glenn Pritzlaff in 1999 but missed having a qualifier for 8 out of the 15 years. Even Pitt had more NCAA points at this weight - yuck! While familiar faces Oklahoma State and Iowa are at the top, there is a lot of variance in the top 10 with 5 different schools for this time period. Oklahoma State was the only school to qualify all 15 years. In fact, they have had a wrestler qualify at 167/174 for the past 31 years going back to when they were banned from the tournament in 1993.

The next chart shows the combined data used to create the first two charts to show the top ten teams over the last 30 years of NCAA tournaments. With the last 15 years of dominance, it was enough to overcome the prior 15 years of being dominated for Penn State to edge out Oklahoma State for 1st place. Ohio State has done pretty well at 174 in the last 15 years coming in at 5th place but only scored a total of 1.5 points for the prior 15 year period so they missed the 30 year top 10 list.

Here's the list of Penn State wrestlers at 167/174 for the past 30 years and their performance at the NCAA tournament. Just another way to show visually how Penn State has dominated this weight class under Cael and Company.

And finally, here's a color coded top 3 list for 167/174 since 1995:

Going back one more year to 1994 and you capture Mark Branch being a 4 time finalist and two time champ
Branch came out of nowhere to win in 1994. He was unseeded and, as I recall, basically a .500 wrestler on the season coming in. But that bracket blew up and he took advantage. No one thought, frankly, he would ever do it again, but he made 3 more finals.

Didn’t realize they just looked it up and he was 8-9 going into NCAA.
