For the next weight class, we're going to take a look at Penn State's 2nd best weight class in terms of NCAA points (#1 for champions) during the Cael Era. This is also Iowa's worst weight class in the Cael Era and for the past 30 years. <I used the same parameters and scoring as the 174 and 125 weight classes. 177 is combined with 184 for 1995-1998.>

Nine championships out of 15 tournaments with 5 different wrestlers winning is quite remarkable (understatement). This is also the only weight class that has a NCAA qualifier every year under Cael. Nebraska is the only other team to qualify at 184 all 16 years. This is UNI's only appearance on a top 10 list during the Cael Era thanks to Parker Keckeisen and Drew Foster. Steve Bosak and Gabe & Max Dean powered Cornell to a strong 2nd place on the list.

For the 15 years BCE, Cael still existed, just as a pretty good wrestler rather than just a pretty good coach. Because of Cael and another familiar name, Jake Varner, Iowa State led the way during this time period. Thanks to Vertus and Greg Jones, this is West Virginia's only appearance on any of the top 10 lists for the 10 weight classes (that's still one more than Rutgers). This was Penn State's worst weight class in the 15 years prior to Cael with only 3 AAs and 35 points scored so they're nowhere near the top 10. The trend continues with 5 different teams on this list versus the Cael Era just like at 174 and 125.

And here is the combined list for the past 30 tournaments. The recent strength of Penn State and Cornell offset the prior 15 years so they again are 1/2 with Iowa State at 3rd. Iowa has the highest total qualifiers with 30 out of 31 tournaments but only had three top-3 finishes.

Listed below is Penn State's lineup since 1995. Eric Bradley had Penn State's highest finish (4th) in the 15 years prior to Cael.

Here's the top 3 for the last 30 tournaments. Iowa has never won a championship at 184 since it started in 1999. This also hasn't been a great weight class overall for Oklahoma State.

Thanks! It is unbelievable how much Penn State has dominated this weight since Cael arrived. In one of your charts I noticed the two championships won by Les Gutches in the 90s. Gutches won the Hodge in 1996 and won a World gold in 1997. I was recently up in Oregon visiting my parents. My dad and I went for a drive and stopped by to visit a couple he knew. While there I found out the husband had coached football at South Medford High in the 90s. That caught my attention as my memory was that Gutches went to high school at South Medford. When we left and got back home my dad then decided to tell me that not only was his friend the football coach, but he was also an assistant wrestling coach! I would have loved to have talked to his friend about Gutches : (
