Minnesota isn't called Heavyweight U just because of their coeds. This is the Gophers best weight class and they are the clear leader at Heavyweight with 4 NCs and 11 AAs in the past 15 tournaments. Heavyweight is also Michigan's best weight class as they are a strong 2nd place during the Cael Era. Penn State rounds out the top 3 with with a championship from Anthony Cassar and an outstanding career from Greg Kerkvliet.

Minnesota was even more dominant in the 15 years prior to Cael with a very impressive 12 AAs. This was Penn State's best weight class during this time period with a NC and 3rd place finish from Kerry McCoy and a pair of 2nd place finishes by Aaron Anspach and Pat Cummins. Bakersfield makes a rare appearance on a top 10 list thanks to Stephen Neal's great career.

Minnesota at Heavyweight has the 3rd highest point total for any weight class over the last 30 tournaments behind just Oklahoma State at 133 and Iowa at 125 and has the highest amount of AAs for any school at any weight class with 23. Michigan edges out Penn State in a distant 2nd and 3rd place.

And here's the top 3 since 1995. Minnesota's 14 top 3 finishes in 30 tournaments is remarkable and just like total points, only behind Iowa at 125 and Oklahoma State at 133 with 15 top 3 finishes each.

Great write-up and not surprising. PSU would be a clear #2 if only taken in the last 10 years, as the guys in the first several years of Cael's tenure were brought in by the prior staff, so not really his guys.
