So Dylan Fritelli hits a shot into a tree, one of those mossy hanging jobs down south. He finds his ball, identifies it as his, then takes a club out and hits it from the hanging moss onto the green. Makes the putt for a par. He is later penalized 2 strokes. Anyone know why?

You need to stand to the side of the ball when you make a swing. He faced the target and batted the ball like a tennis shot. That's +2.

Makes perfect sense otherwise you would be hitting putts like pool.

Dumb rule!
It seems when that rule was made, they may have been assuming all shots would be played with the ball resting on the ground. Could they even have imagined a shot being played as described above?? Obviously with the ball on the ground on a horizontal plane it's easy to define "to the side of the ball" depending on which direction the shot is being made. But a suspended ball?? There are an infinite number of planes which could be applied. Suppose a vertical plane was passed through the ball. Fritelli then would have been to the side of the ball based on the orientation of that plane.

It should be noted that the Snead method pictured was not illegal.

You are correct. The picture above shows Snead's "croquet" putt adjusted so that both feet are on the same side of the ball. He did that after his original croquet putting style was deemed illegal ..

Should just done what I would have. Grab the ball out of the moss and toss it back toward the hole. then play on like nothing happened.
