Going to Boston over the Christmas / New Years Holiday. We have two adults and 4 teenagers , good not expert skiers, and are looking for possible day trips as well as staying over night wIthin a three hour drive of Boston. Where are the best family type mountains in this area.
some options:
Waterville Valley (NH) - about 2 hrs. 10 min from Boston
- I've never skied this, so I can't speak to it.
Cannon Mountain (NH) - about 2 hrs. 15 min from Boston
- I love this mountain, but all I ski are the expert runs. There are easier slopes on one side of the resort, and then a big tram feeding some challenging slopes (with spectacular views) at the other side of the resort
Loon Mountain (VT) - about 2 hrs. 30 min from Boston
- I've only been there 1 time. I think it will meet your needs
Mount Snow (VT) - about 2 hrs. 40 min from Boston
- it's been a few decades since I last skied it, so I'll defer on evaluating it beyond saying it was good when I was last there
Okemo Mountain (VT) - about 2 hrs. 40 min from Boston
- it's huge. I prefer Stratton, which isn't too far from Okemo, but based on your skill level I think this would work
Stratton Mountain (VT) - about 2 hrs. 40 min from Boston
- another one of my favorites
Killington (VT - about 2 hrs. 50 min from Boston
- it's huge, but it also tends to get really crowded. It should satisfy all members of your party.
Some others that I've never skied, but which you might consider:
Wachusett Mountain (MA) - about 1 hr. 15 min from Boston
- this is more of a day-trip ski resort. I don't believe it has top-end trails like any of the aforementioned. But if you're not looking for double black diamonds, this could be a good option
Mount Sunapee (NH) - about 1 hr. 50 min from Boston
- I've heard good things about it, but I've never been
Gunstock Mountain (NH) - about 1 hr. 55 min from Boston
- It's popular with families. I've seen it in the summer, but not in the winter
Keep in mind that all of the resorts will be quite busy in the week between Christmas and New Years, and you'll be paying holiday rates at the slopes as well as at the hotels/lodges. Speaking of lodging, it might behoove you to just pick one of the above, and try to get a lodging reservation for one night, or at least check into it.
