My wife and I are thinking about going away between Christmas and New Year’s Day. Unfortunately, lots of other people want to do the same thing. I’ve done both New Orleans and the Savanna/Charleston area previously.Going to Key West or the Caribbean is outside our budget, although somewhere warm would be nice. My wife loves to gamble and has suggested Vegas. What other options can you guys suggest?

There are native American casinos in Southwest Florida. MIccosukee casino.

Not quite as far as Key West. You could take the Auto Train from DC and then drive from the drop off point in Florida.

If going to Key West is outside your budget, I wouldn’t recommend gambling in Vegas.

I’m not a gambler. Hotels and house related in key west are crazy high. Not to mention flights. My dream isn’t to go to Vegas, which is why I asked for alternate suggestions.

Funny, I was going to jokingly suggest Vegas to watch bowl games in the sportsbook. Probably not what the wife has in mind (didn't know she was a gambler!). Vegas isn't as warm as folks think in the winter, so if that is part of the equation, may not be as desirable.

We aren’t dead set on warm weather. If we had more time, we’d maybe go to Germany to visit the Christmas markets. If we went to Vegas it would be mostly sightseeing, but wife likes sports so bowl games would be possible.

You can spend 3 hours at a blackjack table and lose hundreds. You can bet $50 on a football game and be entertained for 3 hours. Just sayin!

Agree on Quebec City. It’s a beautiful small city with great restaurants, quaint shops, nice culture, and beautiful scenery. It’s like going to France but much cheaper and with Canadian hospitality. The Hotel Frontenac in the photo above is a gem and there are less expensive small inns in or near the old part of the city within the walls which is where you want to be located. Best of all you can drive there and save the cost of airfare.

Asheville, NC. The Biltmore Estate is beautiful during Christmas, There’s some great beer and food in downtown Asheville, 45 mins south is a town named Tryon that supposedly has a really cool light display, heard from more than a few people that the spas are good there, and the Cherokee casino (for the wife) is about an hour west of there.

The greater Phoenix area has a lot to offer if you're not looking for a resort to camp at. There's a **** ton to see within an hour if you rent a car. Plenty of places to gamble.

I can’t speak from experience but Charleston South Carolina is a place I’ve wanted to visit. The weather that time of year shouldn’t be too harsh. It’s known for fine dining, lots of great B&Bs, and within an easy drive of Kiawah and other coastal resorts for additional sightseeing. Others on this AKB more knowledgeable may want to opine.

You know better than that. The board will opine regardless of knowledge 😁

Yes, Eve done that before in late December and it was great. New Orleans is great that time of year as well. Just looking at different options we haven’t done or considered.

Someone suggested a cruise above and that does seem to be a good solution. Not done looking at options though, and we could decide to staycation.

I would look at St. Augustine, FL, Cape Canaveral or Destin FL

St Augustine at Christmas is a circus. Its great with the lights and all, but everything from parking to restaurants is mobbed.
Space Coast wouldn't be a bad bet. We are not so "tourism centric" here so we don't get waves of tourists for the most part.

You are spot on - it's super crowded and forget about getting into any restaurants - it's great any other time.
