A few years ago moms and I put together an us + kids + their friends killington snowboard trip post Chritmas and the mountain sucked asss. I just got off the phone with son1 who rides the west (40-50 days) every year and told him I’d like to host a big crew out west but he told me snow is not a guarantee even out west post Christmas. FFS really?

So I ask, what mountain out west comes thru almost always 12/26-1/3?

thanks rick

Mt. Bachelor probably has better local accommodations for a group.

Mt Bachelor, Bend, OR - Snow coverage by mid-December: On average, about 73% of the ski terrain is open by mid-December. By Christmas, that jumps to 90% open, meaning most terrain is usually accessible by then. Only around 10% of seasons see less than half the mountain available at Christmas

Mt. Hood....

Timberline Lodge

Offers the longest ski season in North America, often starting in early to mid-November and running through the end of May
  • Given its early start and consistent snowpack, you can typically ski almost daily from mid-November through Christmas. Its high elevation and glacier area (e.g., Palmer) make it highly reliable timberlinelodge.comWikipedia.

Mt. Hood Meadows

  • Skiable most days by Christmas, assuming the season opens as average and with regular snowfall backing it up. Terrain and lift operations typically ramp up through December skihood.comOnTheSnow.

Mt. Hood Ski Bowl

  • If open by early December, expect skiing available most days, with moderate snowfall sustaining lift operations through Christmas snowpak.comSnow Forecast.

Timberline skiing is open 10 months out of the year. They just closed for the season on August 17th. I've been there at the end of July and they had plenty of snow (considering it was almost August) Did not get time to ski, but it's a great setting with the lodge. (Overlook Hotel from the Shining)

It's going to be hit or miss that early in the season out there depending on weather patterns. Your best early snow makers and places that most likely will have the most coverage out there are A Basin, Loveland and Keystone. Utah doesn't make much snow since they get so much natural.

Problem is its early in the season. You have several options. You can just book and hope for where you go has a few good early season storms. You can wait until the last minute and book while paying through the nose booking last minute and most likely a smaller selection of openings. If you look at the early forecasts for winter (they are literally worth nothing at this point have to wait until Nov to get a clear picture) I would head to Jackson Hole or Big Sky. Early signs showing a below avg snowfall for Utah/Colorado with Jackson Hole (cool town) and Big Sky above average. Doesn't mean it will happen but odds right now show that where snow will likely fall and less likely fall.

We were in Big Sky last summer, first time in 15 years. That resort area has grown immensely. Fly into Bozeman non-stop on United from Newark and it's only an hours ride away.

Jackson Hole is obviously a great resort area too and United also flies non-stop to JH. We flew into there last summer. Get a seat on the right side, the views of the Tetons when landing are unmatched.

Did you mention what multi mountain pass you all are using? That would narrow things down unless you are comfortable with $250 daily rates.

Do you go there regularly? I was just in Columbia River Gorge area a couple weeks ago. Didn't get to the Mt Hood trails but saw it from the gorge. Love that area (EDIT I wasn't there for skiing)

Mt Hood I believe closed about 2-3 weeks ago for skiing. Crazy to think A Basin and Loveland will be pulling the snowguns out shortly after Labor Day to get ready to start making snow by the end of September.

No, I don't ski anymore, but have plenty of friends that hit Mt Hood Meadows. Just got too expensive to do it part-time.
Yeah, the Gorge is a really cool place. I never get sick of driving through.

I buy the boys the (this year $1400) mega epic or IKON pass. Not sure which they buy but I Venmo it over BAMM, Christmas is covered in September
It was LOTS cheaper when he was in USC

1 said his goal is 60 days this year

www.wolfcreekski.com if there is snow they will have more than anybody. Stay over in Pagosa Springs . Good chance they will have 3 to 4'. Fly into Denver and truck on down!
Had the best day of my skiing life at wolfcreek. Snow up to and beyond my waist. That was about 37 years ago. Wolfcreek gets a tremendous amount of snow. We lost two days of skiing when the mountain couldn't open because of too much snow. One day an avalanche pushed a snowplow off the road so the road was closed.

Home mountain now is Vail. They will be open mostly on the Frontside by Christmas as they have a pretty big snowmaking operation now. The Back depends on mother nature.

Moms had meetings at Vail and loves it despite its snottiness. Would you say frontside would be a 95% option?

95% is up up to mother nature. Lots of frontside terrain. I'd say that most of the front will be open. It usually is by then. The back might be open or part of it at least i hope so. Blue Sky might be open too. That's my favorite part of Vail. Most of the people at Vail aren't snotty. That's especially true for people working there. Lots of varied terrain but Vail doesn't have a great deal of very steep terrain so if you are looking for mostly steeps try Utah or elsewhere. If you come to Vail I can tell you where to avoid the lift lines.
