An underrated offensive play from Rattler

On 3rd and 19 from the 21 with 11 minutes left, Rattler's scramble to the left for 4 yards was absolutely enormous. Take a sack there and we are looking at a 45 yard fg from the right hash.

Instead, we get a 34 Yarder from the middle of the field. There is no better way to take pressure off a young kicker than to do that IMO.

As for the play call, it doesn't look like it was a designed draw, but maybe they just told Rattler to bale after his first read. It also looks like we got away with a hold there by Jakai Moore on Bresee. It worked, but I'm not a huge fan of that play call. There is no chance that we are getting a first down on that play so the outcome was exactly what you want, but it was near disaster if we get that holding call or Rattler takes a sack. Pre-play, I was yelling and wishing for us to just run left and go down if there was no run gap . I got what I wanted, but not how I expected lol. Getting the lead in THAT moment was huge!

How about the 3rd and 7 (ish) to try to get a first down and seal the game for good? Clemson had just called their 2nd timeout? The only thing the coaching staff should have been telling Rattler is this : > We're calling a pass play but if it's not open, just take a knee. Literally fall on the ground. At the very least we'll force Clemson to use their 3rd and final timeout. Ok? Got it? You sure? You understand the situation right?

What does he do instead? Scrambles and throws it out of bounds stopping the clock. <smh> Sometimes I can't, I just can't.

Eh, that wasn't that big of a deal. He made the right call there. Trying to get the first down was priority #1.

According to their fans we were holding all game anyway. Funny thing about that........I remember feeling the same way about the good teams of old that used to kick our butts.

Yea....and being aggressive on offense is the reason we won the game in the first place. Taking a knee is Muschampish.
Play to win.

Indeed. We put ourselves in position to win by playing to win. You don't change up and start playing to not lose.

As it is, Clemson was gonna get the ball back with 2 minutes left and a decently short field. That's tons of time. A couple of plays could have easily put them in FG range to win the game. The timeout wasn't that important. If there had been 30 seconds left in the game, it might have been a different story.

Doing what we could to try getting the first down was absolutely the right call. Not there so don't risk it and throw the ball away.

Goodness, imagine the outrage if we had been in position to win but Rattler just took a knee there, Clemson got the ball with 2 minutes, hit a couple plays and kicked the FG to win 33-31. There would be scores of posts angrily questioning whey didn't try to get the first down.

I don't think Beta was saying not to try for the first down or throw the ball at all, just that it wasn't the right move to throw the ball away, which is what stopped the clock before the punt.

Sure, try for the first down, if you don't get it, no problem, but it would have likely been a better idea for Rattler to fall down and lose 3.5 or 4 yards and make them burn the last timeout.

We won, so who cares, but in that moment I was worried we had just screwed up.

If he had taken the knee, we'd have punted with about 2:27 on the clock with zero Clemson timeouts. As it is, we punted with 2:22 on the clock with 1 Clemson timeout. If we had taken a knee, Clemson would have had the ball around the 40 with 2:17 on the clock. That's an eternity, even with no timeouts. With that much time on the clock and the field position the timeout was irrelevant. You've got a shorter field to run a 2-minute offense. They could have very easily gotten into FG range with ample time on the clock even without a timeout.

Rattler trying to scramble to buy time and find an open receiver was the smart play in my opinion.

Plus you don't give up momentum. Sacrificing momentum for one time out is not a good trade. Play to win.

Scramble yes, but throwing the ball wasn't necessary. He could have fallen forward(without being touched to prevent a fumble) to the 15 which would have put us only 4 yards back. The difference would have been 3 to 4 yards max.

I hadn't considered the few seconds that the ball was in the air that time ran off, so good point there, but that timeout could have been important when getting their FG unit on the field at the end of the game. I'm glad they never got that chance!!!

I'm not sure why I'm discussing this play so much anyways as it has nothing to do with my OP ahhaha

If we could just run the ball, we would be unstoppable. The only thing I can determine is that our O-Lineman are big and slow footed and get beat to the spot-on run plays. No lower leverage. For the most part they pass blocked well against a good D-Line. Those two Ends for Clemson are Good! Murphy will be a beast in NFL. Henry needs 20 more LBs. Anyway, how do we get the ability to get 3 yards when we need them. that has to be fixed next year. I love our Freshman O-line class and watch out in two years- Holy Smokes we are in a Golden position to reap the benefits of this win. By the way- I predicted 31-28 Good guys. I didn't account for the Safety that didn't happen. i watch a play a day and still just riding the high of this win. Good time to be a Gamecock. WE looked physically comparative for the first time in a long time against top tiered teams back to back. WE need more Adkins. Kid is a freakin baller. Love everyting about him- true grit player who hits. Blocks with passion. I got the need for some Adkins.
