And letting people say things when they don't know you or your story, makes you a bad person when you defend yourself?...I'm like Mulkey, the timing of these articles should make one stand back and take pause.
If these articles were about our coach, this board would be up in arms.
There have been plenty of articles about our coach, and all have been largely positive. Does she have her detractors? Of course, mostly far right culture warriors who don’t like her unabashed support for fellow black female coaches, or don’t like that she keeps her players in the locker room during the national anthem because she doesn’t want them to be pawns in the culture wars.
Mulkey brings the negative light upon her by being combative with the media. Her coaching successes are a matter of record: four natties. But she expects a sycophantic press corps, and no one in the public arena gets that or has a right to that. When asked about player issues, she gives cryptic answers that lead to supposition. She was (is) a defiant anti-vaxxer, and that’s her right, but when you flaunt it publicly, you should not be surprised that there will be some criticism.
Mulkey’s departure from Baylor had much to do with her inflated sense of her value to the university. Yes, her teams were the only bright spot in the Baylor athletic department for a time, but she was never going to get top billing over football and MBB, and that grated on her. Really, even at UConn, Geno is not going to get top billing over MBB, and he accepts that. Even with another natty at LSU, Mulkey will not usurp football’s influence.
Bottom line: she’s one of the greatest WBB coaches of all time. She earned every bit of her success. It’s too bad she walks through life with a huge bitter chip on her shoulder because she can’t forgive or forget.
