Luka is now ineligible for a super max deal because of the trade. Mavs were about to have to pay him 345 million. Other issue is his health because he can’t stay off the injured list and he sucks at playing defense. It’s a wild trade but I don’t necessarily fault the Mavs.

ETA: IF Davis can stay healthy no one is scoring in the post against the Mavs with he and Lively.

AD is done with LeBron and the Lakers.

Lakers want the TV ratings with Luka. LeBron is about to quit.

It’s a good move for the Lakers since they get a super star and don’t have to pay him a supermax deal now. I would not be shocked if Lebron is traded….maybe Golden State for one last run for all of them?

As a Celtics fan, it pains me to say i am impressed with the Lakers here. They were not going to win a championship with the current team, and when LeBron retired in a year or two they were going to be up a creek because they have no assets. Now, the current team isnt winning a championship either, but now they can start building for the future. not having to sign Luka to a super max is HUGE for team building.

By all reports LeBron had no idea this was coming, so i wouldn’t be surprised if he isnt the next out the door.

it’s not going to matter a lick for the lakers though if they can’t keep Luka away from the buffet

Agreed, how high would the TV ratings be a for a Celtics warriors finals if the warriors have both Steph and LeBron on the team?

Now that I’ve had time to process it my same thought remains: what the hell are the Mavs thinking? He’s the 2nd best player in the league. They can say “Oh he’s not in the best shape he could be” and I would say so what!!! Again he’s the 2nd best player in the league. You might can put Gianias ahead of him at 2 but he’s older. He’s 25!!!! He’s not even in his prime yet. Only thing that makes sense is he told them he wasn’t resigning and wanted a trade. But All the reporting is that is not the case.

and that brings me to the return. Yikes!! There are many other teams that could have beat this deal. AD is 32. And if you wanna say Luka is injured a lot well so is AD. He’s always had trouble staying healthy. I would say he’s an old 32, he won’t still be playing at 40 like LeBron. And then the Mavs got ONE first round pick. There are far lesser players than Luka who have been traded for 4 first round picks. This is just a terrible terrible deal. I’ve been reading some Mavs sites and the comments, the fans are PISSED. He wasn’t even shopped around to get the best deal, other teams had no idea he was available. The ONLY way this makes any kind of sense is if Luka said “I want to go to the Lakers, I’m not signing any new contracts and if you try to trade me anywhere else I will tell the other teams that I will absolutely not resign with you”. But again everybody says that did not happen. Just a mind numbing decision. They didn’t even get half of what they should have for the 2nd best player in the league who is only 25, not even in his basketball prime yet

Mavs didn’t want to pay Luka the supermax deal, plain and simple but I do agree they should have gotten way more for him than what they got.

All i can figure out is that they finally reached the breaking point with Luka’s complete lack of effort to keep himself in shape. It has been ridiculous. He’s like the pilsbury doughboy. Him and Embid seem to be cut from the same stone. Absolute freak of nature, but not willing to put the work in to stay healthy

The one good thing about this trade from my perspective is it takes my Hawks off the hook for trading Luka for Trae on draft night. Nobody is going to talk about that being the dumbest trade to involve Luka anymore.

The Lakers roster is currently in pretty bad shape if they are done making moves. 1st round exit. They might have the worst defense in the league outside of the Wizards

I was watching Bill Simmons and Ryen Rusillo and they made the point that with the salary cap continuing to rise every year that deal won’t look so big in a couple of years. A bargain even for a top 3 player like Luka.
