Penn State and head fencing coach Wes Glon are being sued by a recent fencing grad who claims Glon emotionally abused her and that Penn State failed to act on her complaints.
I honestly don't know where the line is drawn between tough love coaching and emotional abuse, but that line certainly keeps moving. Is this a snowflake student-athlete or a coach with a misogyny problem?
Glon's coaching record testifies to his expertise in coaching the sport, but, as the article notes, this is the second time he's been implicated in a female's accusation of abuse. Last summer Glon was banned by the U.S. Center for Safe Sport for three years for his handling of his assistant coach's alleged transgressions against a female coach (non-PSU) on a plane returning from a west coast meet. Penn State suspended Glon from his coaching duties when SafeSport did, and then reinstated him in November when Glon successfully appealed to get SafeSport to lift its ban.
Wes Glon must be in his sixties, so if Penn State ends up settling with Zara Moss, it wouldn't surprise me if Glon's retirement is part of that deal. It might be time for a whole new Fencing coaching staff.
