Her appearance at the Grammy’s was difficult to watch but she’s a gem. What a true artist so sadly lacking now in music. This song is about her breakup with Crosby. David learned of Joni dumping him when someone played this for him while still living in Laurel Canyon. No phonecall…just a song. Favorite line is “was it hard to fold a hand you knew you could win”. Pure Genius.

She was the absolute fave of all the girls I grew up with in the 1970s....I never was a fan, but I tended more towards rock-and-roll, not folk.

I voted for her in Toms Grammy pole

There are a lot of great singers in this world. I prefer the attractive ones.
I make an exception for Janis Joplin.

Joni’s mother-in-law was my kindergarten teacher for a grand total of three (3) days. On the night of day three (Wednesday) my parents attended “faculty night”. The next morning my parents adamantly insisted that I be assigned to the other K-teacher. On Friday, the Principal escorted me to Mrs K’s classroom and the rest is history. 😎

If you think Joni is a bit off-kilter, her MIL was ever weirder.

I also remember Joni and her husband Chuck playing a concert in our elementary school courtyard early the next year( spring)

Tom Rush’s recordings of Urge for Going and The Circle Game are among the best songs I’ve heard. When I saw him perform recently in New Hope he told the story about meeting Joni in Detroit, Michigan when she was just starting out performing (they were at the same club) and she sent him tapes of those two songs shortly after when she hurriedly wrote them. He got permission to record them and The Circle Game became the title song on one of his most successful albums. He performed Urge for Going again a few weeks ago when I saw him. I love the line- “See the geese in chevron flight”, and it’s become a lexicon when I’m out for a walk with my wife and the flock of geese goes overhead. It’s brilliant.

Here’s a groovy clip of Joni along with CSN&Y at the Celebration at Big Sur concert way back in 1969.

The concert is pretty good especially the CSN&Y parts.

Love seeing all the old VW vans during in part 2.

Also, pretty amazing how close the fans were allowed to sit to the performers.

Always important to consider a musician's looks when listening to their music.
Comical, but what's interesting is that it did partially contribute to the decline in individual artistry/talent in music that started with the MTV era. There is a lot written about how many of the great singer songwriters from the 70's would not have been signed in the 80's because as they say "they had faces made for radio".

Is this like a Joni game? Yes on the talent, no on the looks, yes on the music, no on the politics?
To the extent I was not clear, I find her unattractive. I suspect she would say the same about me.
I do not enjoy her music. That is a personal preference Many people don't like Janis Joplin. For some reason, I do.
I generally do not agree with her politics and I know quite a bit where she stands on most issues. I will not go into detail because I am among the many here who do not believe this board is a place for politics.
That said, I will admit the woman has talent, but so does Eminem and I don't care for his music either.
With that I will leave this thread and go listen to Haydn's Symphony No. 104 which I enjoy and most people don't even know exists. :)
