I’m not sure whether this belongs on a TV thread or a food thread…

i‘m a big foodie (figuratively and literally) and watch all kinds of food TV stuff. I used to watch Anthony Bordain’s travel food show No Reservations. I just recently found out about this Somebody Feed Phil show, but it reminds me a lot of No Reservations. Both explore foods in various exotic and interesting locations, focusing on simple pleasures, traditional favorites, and fine dining. They also spend some time on the people, culture, and history. The big difference is that Bordain seemed like a snarky jerk, while Phil seems like a uber goofy nice guy. Phil, is Phil Rosenthal, the creator, writer, and executive producer of the Everybody Loves Raymond.

Andrew Zimmern has been doing such a show for years so this seems like kind of a copycat show. Never watched the Phil show.

Yes, like the Zimmerman show as well. Phil is a lot more of the wider eyed goofy tourist as opposed to a pro chef like Bordain or Zimmerman.

It's different than that. I was never a huge fan of Andrew Zimmern for some reason, I think there were too many catch phrases etc to start. But he does have a good story I think, maybe I should give him another try.

Somebody feed Phil is similar to some of Bourdains shows with all of the cynicism and irony stripped away and replaced with over the top cheerfulness and earnestness. If you can get over his goofiness, which is sincere, it's a fun watch. I think thats why I can take his demeanor, it is sincere and truly who he is. It's not a put on. I sometimes feel myself embarrassed for him, but he doesn't care, why should I.

Phil is a much different guy than Andrew. He’s the creator of Everybody Loves Raymond. His father, who is a rabbi, married one of my neighbors years ago, and I believe his mother who was sometimes on the show has now passed away. It’s a good show and we’ll worth watching as he gets into to culture of the cities he visits and is very self deprecating in his humor. Its as much about the people as it is about the food. It’s fun.

Couldn't agree more. Great show if you love travel food and drink. Phil at least seems happy while traveling. Bourdain made it feel like a chore.
