eta: didn't mean to say "state" playoffs

Given difficulty of SEC and big 10 has Arizona state made an argument that it was better to join a weaker conference to get on. I know big 10 and sec are getting more teams in but it's very difficult to be on the top 3 every year, i would argue it's likely easier for a team like MSU to get to higher points in a conference like big12 or ACC as long as they still give credence to power 4 and not just a power 2. Looks like teams like SMU and ASU made good conference moves along with good coaching recruiting decisions to be right in the playoffs. Ole Miss has a loaded roster beat some good teams but will still miss because they lost to three mid teams. Not advocating for leaving sec for a lot of other reasons but just from stand point of easier path with portal and nil you could still build a good team and make play off easier in big 12.

We would be MUCH better off in either Big 12 or ACC. But no real path to get there right now.

For sure. I don’t see this program finishing in the top half of the sec in the future, due to financial realities. that’s even if it’s fairly well managed, which it is not.

I eventually see football breaking off into separate power divisions and other sports being in their own conferences eventually. Football is screwing everything else up over the money grab. You will have top 2-3 from acc big 12 and top 6 from sec and top 6 from big 10 and they will be like top tier mais schools. The rest of us go back to some other conference realignment

it seems we are separating ourselves from the pack, leaving no doubts.

We benefit from being in the SEC. If we gave up that advantage to join a weaker (less lucrative) conference, we would struggle just as much to compete in the weaker conference. In other words, yes, SEC Mississippi State would be competitive in the Big 12, but Big 12 Mississippi State would struggle in the Big 12, similar to how we struggle in the SEC.

It's better to be in the SEC collecting TV money than hypothetically having an easier path to the CFP.

I guarantee this: University presidents and ADs aren't thinking, "What is the easiest path to the CFP next year?" They are thinking, "How do we get into the SEC or Big Ten?"

No we wouldn’t. Our resources are very comparable to most of the schools in the Big 12 & ACC. No reason we couldn’t be competitive in either.

We’d have an easier path to the playoff, sure.

But the harsh reality is that Mississippi State is never going to win a national championship in football, or come anywhere close to it, really. Therefore I have no interest in jumping ship just for the chance of maybe losing a 1st round road game once every 10 years or so…..and sacrificing all that added revenue being doled out to the SEC and B1G in the process.

There will come a time when a decision about our future in the SEC will have to be made. Uneven revenue sharing is coming in the near future, and the requirement to start paying out NIL from in-house revenue is only going to accelerate the timeline. If we get to the point where there’s no longer any financial incentive to remain in the SEC, we’ll see what needs to happen. But that day won’t be tomorrow, or in the next 2-3 years in all likelihood.

We'd lose the resources when we leave the lucrative SEC.

Our resources... as an SEC team.

We would be trading our share of SEC money for a share of Big 12/ACC money.
This is correct, look how the SEC has bypassed the other conferences in basketball. That's the SEC football money that bridged that gap.

Of course we’d lose the SEC payday. But in terms of fan support, & donations we’d be comparable with most of the schools in Big 12 & ACC.
I agree. We still fill up (when we are good at least) a 60,000+ person stadium. That's more than what most Big 12 schools are capable of at their best as well. I don't think our fan support would fall much at all. In fact, a year in and year out shot at winning the Big 12 would boost attendance I'd bet.

We are currently ranked 14th in the SEC in stadium capacity. With a half dozen of them 50% or more larger. In the Big 12 we'd be tied with Iowa State for 2nd in capay and only 2000 seats behind number 1 BYU. We'd be very competitive in that conference.

Leaving the SEC money and status would be dumb.

We need to find a way to innovate/moneyball our team to be that 3rd/4th SEC team every 5 years. Thats the better path.
