As for Patrick Palmeiro ...

I wonder if the situation for baseball is the same as in football. From what I understand about football, if a guy walks on and receives academic money rather than an athletic scholly, he doesn't count against the 25/85, but only if it can be shown that the guy was not actively recruited by the school. If this is true, and if this is also true for baseball, could this be the reason why Patrick Palmeiro would have said that he has not been "contacted" by state, and the reason why Pornfro is chiming in on Patrick Palmeiro threads that, "... to my knowledge Patrick is not being recruited by Mississippi State?" It feels like utter ******** to me that "we're not recruiting" him. But it makes sense if we are trying to get the most out of him walking on.

Anybody got a better theory?

Football and basketball - If a player receives ANY kind of scholarship, he counts against the NCAA scholarship limitations. Whether or not he was actively recruited doesn't have anything to do with it.

Baseball - Players on non-athletic scholarships don't count against the scholarship limits.

We didn't recruit Patrick Palmeiro because Polk didn't want him, for whatever reason.

rosters are capped at 35 next year whether you are a walk on or a scholarship player. So we may not have had enough room. The puzzling part is why we signed some of the guys we did over him.

I think there's been a change in philosphy though. Whereas Polk would not recruit a player if it meant having to cut another player, I strongly suspect Cohen won't have any problem cutting a player who isn't getting the job done to sign a 22nd round draft pick.

but I'm pretty sure that in football there's a way around the scholarship limit if the kid is not recruited. I stand to be shown a complete idiot.

I have not a [17n] clue about basketball.

from the old staff...His stats are less than impressive. Im not sure how he went in the 22nd round:

This past spring, the 6-foot-3 and 205-pound Palmeiro hit .316 with four home runs and 25 RBIs for Colleyville. Palmeiro transferred to Colleyville before last season and came from Fort Worth Christian.

see flagg.

the size alone is enough to make scouts look. add the last name of palmeiro, and you have a chance for a good player. i'd rather have those numbers than the 5'10", 175 pounders polks gets every year with the same numbers.
