At what point do we start to worry about 3 point defense?

After the Kentucky game it was easy enough to say nobody is going to shoot that well from 3 against us, but every SEC game (excluding USCe) we've allowed 35% or better 3 point shooting. Butler also shot better than 35% against us. Defense isn't something we've had to worry about from Jans' teams so far in his tenure, but this year could be a deviation from the norm

We don’t guard anyone hard at all. Just watch them shoot and hope they miss. That’s not defense

We are worst in the SEC in three point defense. Tonight was basically our season average and it wasn’t a good showing. UT shot 35% even with them missing several other wide open looks.

At this point, just seems like we are what we are.

This is a team that will be pretty lucky to finish .500 in SEC play. And we’re still a Top 15 team in the country. Kinda nuts. Its basically the basketball version of the 2010 football team.

Top 10 teams usually shoot pretty good especially at home. I realize there are a couple exceptions in our body of work but it may be a little early to push the panic button just yet. I could be wrong.....time will tell.

We play good interior defense, mostly. We rebound well.

We don't play exterior defense well and we don't move around at all on offense on the exterior (or set enough picks)

So this team is men in the paint and little girls at the 3

This is not hard. This is an 8-10 team with a chance to be 9-9. On schedule

When Hub is on the floor who ever he is guarding gets a wide open 3. because they are always 6 inches taller.
Lanier shot over Hubbard with a very clear look all night and on the close out had nothing to worry about, wide open looks

I analyzed the stats through six SEC games. There is not enough data, but to this point, SEC teams are shooting at roughly the same 3P% against State (34.15%) as they are in similar (home/away) SEC games (34.22%). The biggest negative discrepancy is Kentucky (50% @ State compared to 24% @ Georgia)*. The next is Ole Miss (37.14% @ State compared to 34.09% in their other two road SEC games).

*-Only one game to compare, but I think it's safe to say Kentucky won't shoot 50% from three in SEC road games this season.

The defense that is coached and that we play relies on a helper being there if the opposition gets by his man. Basically its a help side defense. When we do this, if the distance is to great for the "helper" to get back to his man because the main guy gets beat, then its just a scramble. We don't scramble well. It shouldn't be hard for D1 players to knock down open 3s. In the past few weeks, they have in deed knocked them down.

What should be discussed is our atrocious on ball defense. IE....our guards can't guard the ball.

Big Ten used to have years like this, where the conference is loaded and sends a ton of teams to the tourney. a 10-8/9-9 team in some of those years are very good teams you don’t want to draw come March. That said this team is in a slump and needs to get things figured out. Offense is stagnant and they need to find an identity.
