there is no way that we should be in comp with them for our next head coach, but the rumors from the 3 people at auburn that care about baseball are that they would call Cohen first.

Of course, he hasn't really proved himself so we need to wait it out a few more years on him.

hire Raffo.

It would be impressive if Raffo is successful there. Auburn just sucks.

I think Cohen would do allot here but it would be our luck if Raffo went and took AU to Omaha.

It's been done before and it will be done again. They have great facilities and a solid recruiting base. There's really no excuse for them to be missing the SEC tournament on a routine basis.

I'm not so sure about that. It takes alot more than a nice-looking, undersized baseball stadium. They weren't all that with Hal Baird. We are talking about an administration that built a state of the art facility that couldn't host regionals b/c they were too stupid to realize you had to have a certain size stadium to host.(They had to go back later and add more seats.) That is the type leadership they have over there. After Baird left, they hired long-time assistant Steve Renfroe who sucked, then hired Tom Slater after they couldn't pull Tim Corbin out of Vandy. Tom Slater had no real quality background to be a head coach in the SEC. My point is that they probably didn't have all that many bites from quality coaches. That tells me others don't view them highly either. How many times do we have to hear that Auburn basketball or baseball has "Recruited really well and are only struggling b/c they are young". "Boy, next year's team is really going to be something."

Like Polk, Baird's records did tail off towards the end of his career. But he's the 6th winningest coach in SEC history (and is 8th in winning percentage). So, yeah, for most of his career, they were all that with Hal Baird. They were consistantly in the upper half of the SEC for close to 20 years before they started sucking.

Edited to add that with a quick Google, I found that under Baird Auburn finished above .500 in the SEC 11 times in 13 years and took them to 2 CWS. I'm not sure if we've ever finished above .500 in the SEC 11 times in 13 years.

Obviously, they've made some poor choices with their HC selections- Renfroe, I believe was Baird's chosen successor, lest we make that mistake, and Slater just didn't work. But, they do have a very nice facility, they're in the SEC, and they are in a pretty good recruiting area, nicely nestled in between Georgia, Florida, and of course in Alabama. As far as players, I would say that they are in better shape than we are. But Auburn has had players like Bo Jackson, Frank Thomas, Gregg Olson, and Tim Hudson just to name a few, so they do have some pretty good tradition.

MSU and Auburn may very well be the top two coaching jobs that are open this upcoming off season. Personally, I think we are a little more attractive, but I'm probably biased. I would hope that we have the edge as far as fanbase and money that we are willing to offer. AU may very well wait to see what we do to see what the market is. Their list of coaching candidates will probably be very similar to ours, maybe minus Steve Smith.

The interest in Auburn baseball has been all but sucked dry in the last eight years, but when Auburn is winning, baseball is a lot of fun here and is very well attended. Eveyone wanted Renfroe to succeed. From what I understand, there's not a finer man walking the earth. Unfortunately, that might have also been his weakness, and the reason that they overcompensated in the hiring of Slater, who is a yeller/cusser/call people out type coach. It will be interesting to see what happens this time. I would think something more down the middle a la Polk and Baird might be the right call. And though I don't want Raffo to get the job in Starkville, I would be all for him getting a shot over here. Something tells me they are going to make another run at Corbin though, and will probably try to hire a proven head coach.

because let's say that we theoretically hire Cohen and Auburn hires Corbin, then of course UK and Vandy will be out looking for coaches. I bet UK will promote their pitching coach Gene Henderson, and I don't know what Vandy would do. O'Conner would be a good fit at Vandy because Virginia is also a pretty good school academically, or they could also hire from within.

Personally, I think if Auburn hired Raffo it would be another mistake on their part, unless it is as a hitting coach.

give Corbin a call. I think that's gotta be the hardest job in the SEC with the ridiculous cost of going to school there.

you've got to figure Vandy's not a long-term gig for him. And if he can have Vandy consistantly contending for SEC titles, you've got to figure he could do the same and more at MSU. He'd probably be my #1 choice for the job.

kitchen sink at Corbin. If not we are making a mistake. We have to make it a no-lose situation for him financially.
