Automated speed enforcement systems in active work zones

Well, I got a work zone violation in the mail yesterday for one of my vehicles. I haven't driven this particular vehicle in some time so it's either my wife or daughters. Either way, the fine for a first offense is $0 so no big deal. However, I didn't realize this was a thing in PA. Section b and c in the attached link are interesting. First, the automated process must have a specific number of warnings including one that states if it is currently operating and a violation is 11 mph or more over the posted limit.

Just passing this on. Oh, and they don't take a picture of the driver so I can't determine who was driving at the time. Second offense is $75 and subsequent offenses are $150. It may be cheaper to go get a new license plate? :ROFLMAO:

They have been doing this down here in the DC/MD area for years. The camera only takes a picture of the license plate (that is why there are no points associated) when the vehicle is going 12+ MPH over the speed limit. The fine is always $40, there are no warnings. The cameras are in work zones and school zones. There are also some intersections that have red light cameras and the fine is $80 if you get caught by one of those. Just a money making scheme since there is no other penalties.

Also have them on the PA Turnpike for about a 14 mile stretch near Somerset.

Chiming in from MontCoMd. The cameras aren’t solely in work zones and school zones. If you keep up with the flow of traffic and watch for braking out of nowhere, it’s not an issue. Keep below 12mph above the speed limit and you’ll be fine.

Where else do they put them in MontCoMD? I live in Howard and they are only in school zones, most of the ones I have seen in work zones are on the highways, can't recall seeing any in work zones in HoCo. I drive to Baltimore to go to work and they have them and some signs say school zone, but I swear I haven't been able to find a school in the area.

Always slow down before the porta-potties in the work zones in MD. 50% chance there’s a camera lurking behind them.

I just picked up a ticket in the safe speed zone for on 27 in Damascus. They are all over MoCo.

For example, on Rte 108 just west of Georgia Avenue (Rte 97) in Olney, and another a half-mile further East on 108, near the hospital. Some drive-through neighborhoods have them too. They also use camera vans and move them around.

Was through a work zone on Rt 22 in PA a couple times that had one. With the warnings about its use, you had to seriously not be paying any attention or just straight out thumb your nose at following any semblance of rules.

I have no problem with red light cameras if they are set up to bust the people who run them when they are at the equivalent of not being to a stop bar line on a road when it turns red.

Actually, both these specific examples of speed cameras are near private schools on 108, so there goes my argument.

Yes, I have seen the two of those on Rt 108 when I use to work near the lake in Rio.

In HoCo, I have not seen any that are permanent. They have 2'x2' concrete pads that they put the silver box on and they move them around so you might drive by one school and it is there in the morning, but in the afternoon it is gone. We also have small work vans that have cameras in them that they use.

As someone who has worked in these work zones on major highways, I could offer another solution:

Slow the f*ck down.

That $75 dollar fine would probably end up around $200 with court fees and other administrative fees.

I am surprised they give you a warning for the first one. So does the warning only apply to that specific camera, or do you get a warning for a first offense at any speed camera?

Agree ro, in my earlier years working the Interstate 81, 84, & Green Stamp corridors
I saw some horrible accidents and persons killed.

Yes, and over the years, people have driven faster and faster on roads that are posted at a certain speed limit.

I spoke to a former contact at PennDot a while back, who informed me that one of the reasons to push for safety vests/shirts to be bright yellow vs. the old orange is that people were driving too fast to differentiate between traffic cones and human beings. They would drive too fast and too close to what they percieved as a traffic cone, and would nearly hit someone working on the side of the road.

It applies to the license plate, hence is why I said it may be cheaper to get a new plate.

The ones that I've seen on the Turnpike (when they were first starting the construction near warrendale/cranberry) always had a sign that said they were in use "ahead". Usually about 1/8 mile before the camera vehicle.

Those in use in the construction zone on I79 south near Cannonsburg were not in vehicles. My brother, who drives like miss daisy and has never had a moving violation at 72 yrs old, got 2 a while back. He travels I79 a few times per week between Heidelberg and the Meadows. The tickets didn't show up timely, a few weeks in arrears, and with the first one free then the incremental fines together with his regular travel through the zone he was worried he had a few more on the way....... But he didn't say anything after that so he must have gotten lucky....

Probably should be unconstitutional, since you can’t appeal even if you remember the “violation”- you are automatically guilty on the say so of the cops, or more accurately the cop radar, weeks after the event.

Well I have had no speeding tickets ever, until driving in MoCo near Olney, where I had several in one year. Ridiculous.

Sounds like we may be 'neighbors' work in Damascus live in Hoco.

They have another speed camera or two on 108 going from Damascus to Olney, Ive seen them on 124 as well but they are rotating them some or taking them in for updating as over the last couple months I have seen some cameras not there but their gray base was.

They are always behind the porta pots on 32 between Clarksville and Glenelg.

Hmm, maybe that's why my waze is constantly going off that there are cops in the area even though I never see any.

They have been doing work on that stretch of 32 for what seems life forever.

I live in Elkridge - Eastern side of HoCo.

well, being father of law of a state trooper- slow down, speeding is dangerous, especially older drivers many of whom should be off the road as their vision is so bad! One older driver who should NOT have been driving recently sped through a work zone, did not see a HUGE stop sign, and KILLED a 35 year old worker! My son in law was off duty in our town and saw an older drive weaving all over. He called the local police who stopped the man. The man could NOT even see the police officer's 3 fingers 3 feet away and insisted on driving despite knowing he could not see-how dangerous. My son in law hears excuses after excuses-(There are no signs when there are PLENTY). Slow the frig down-how much faster do you get there by racing through a 1/2 mile construction area! Lucky PA has a warning!

I lived in Germany for 3 years. Germany uses radar/camera to enforce speed limits and some other violations. You get a ticket in the mail and a copy of the picture. We got a ticket for my wife driving in a bus lane in Frankfurt. No doubt about the violation as the picture showed my wife in our car in a lane marked for Bus only. The Germans let you appeal but it this case they had us cold, so we paid and my wife swore she would never drive in Frankfort again.

I used to live in Maryland and we got the Baltimore Sun paper. In the mid-90's a big issue was red light cameras in Baltimore City. The Sun did a review of how the red light cameras worked. One interesting point. The red light cameras were set and run by a contractor who got a percentage of the fines. This fact led to an outcry by drivers. So the city had a police officer review each violation and sign off before sending out the ticket. In this way it was like getting a ticket by a police officer.

Constitutional questions here- big bro watching. Some states / towns have had to rollback.
