I found it odd that Coach Franklin states that penalties are the most overrated statistic yet references whether PSU wins or loses the penalty battle near the beginning of every post-game press conference. I thought he believed that the penalty battle along with the turnover battle and explosive plays battle were key factors in games. Maybe I am misunderstanding.

He‘s a statistics guy. He likes to talk numbers in press conferences for some reason. Maybe behind closed doors he looks more at when penalties happen and their impact, not simply the numbers.

Tucker saying total pass defense...

While Sparty has such ranks...

Total pass efficiency defense...105th
Passing yards allowed...115th
3rd down conversion defense...106th

We are 105th in yards allowed, but 26th in 3rd downs, which is better than Michigan's at 29th, and 8th in TPED; the outlier here is that our 226 passes defended is the MOST in FBS by 15 attempts, 1 of 3 teams to have 200 passes defended.

Another stat that doesn't seem right:

5th in rushing defense. 3 ypc, 79.6 ypg. However, the best rushing teams we have faced is Auburn at 66 and Purdue at 85. Aka our run defense has been great for the competition but hasn't met a competent rushing team yet.

Fun numbers dive.

I agree about TOP. the # of plays is so much more important than TOP.

this weekend that certainly was a key factor.

I think everyone has been trying to figure out the stats that drive wins and spread forever. all of us want to figure out how to beat the odds makers and cash in. a lot of smart people have been trying to figure out Moneyball FB games for a while. So the most important stat in our game v NW was rainfall. That one stat impacted the spread not being covered. in a couple of the Iowa games this year, probably the most important stat was net punting differential. In our 2020 season we had one of our better seasons for TOP and FD differential. In that season we were leading the stats in many games while we were behind due to various mistakes.

just saying this is not simple, and if it was the odds makers would go out of business. All the stats being discussed are important, but in each game they have different importance.
