I think a switch will sometime go off and when it does he will be hard to beat. However, I would have thought that he'd be a lot further along at this point in time based on his pedigree and the training room. This was another match he should have won and not be as close as it was (like several of his wins). He quit wrestling twice, once at end of regulation and also at end of first OT. He was in great finishing position and just stopped - thinking he had TD and looking over at coaches instead of wrestling through the position (because they weren't clear TD's, if at all). If that wasn't bad enough, he couldn't get off bottom in 2 OT periods. Then to not really try for a good shot at end was rather disappointing. I'm really skeptical on how many points he'll provide at NCAAs this year.....hope things change.

He is a 141 wrestler wrestling 149.
He is a AA type kid just not a top 5 kid at this weight.
From hearing him talk about weight, doesn't appear he thinks that way. He could possibly drop to 141 not sure degree of difficulty. He looks pretty muscular. Guess we'll see next year. Still not a real good excuse for not finishing the TDs.

He needs offense. Van Brill can ride pretty well with that merkle also.

Caught a tough break on the penalty. It was a flukey call, legit, but flukey. If not for that he wins.. He was the more aggressive and generated the better scoring opportunities. He can build on that. In most matches, he’ll win those positions. I’m not concerned based on today’s performance

Exactly. I was at the match. He’s a 141 ponder maybe no biggie then bigger 133. If he picks top in 2nd OT he wins. That kid was dead. However it should not have went to OT if he shoots with better angles instead of straight on. Seen a lot of straight on shoots today. Hope they learn and get better.

We definitely need Berge at 157. 165 is loaded this year and we need a lot of points from him. Hopefully he’s wrestling 157 against a very good Michigan team next Friday. Everyone thinks Iowa is the team we need to beat. I disagree. Michigan has a very solid lineup.

Agree. And if DeSanto is done for the season, you can stick a fork in Iowa.

I actually enjoyed the Bartlett match and I thought he deserved to win. He’s wrestling up a weight in Division 1 competition. These two are ranked 18 & 19 according to the TV broadcast and the outcome supports that they are pretty equal. I thought it was kindof chessy that Van Brill took neutral in the last OT and just avoided engaging Beau for 30 seconds.

Beau is going to be competitive with anyone not named Yanni. He can definitely AA and do well in postseason Still learning and has wrestled NQ in almost every match this year. He has had the toughest schedule of any PS wrestler. He will only continue to learn and improve. Don't overthink and overanalyze every match. He will be fine.

Undersized kid who seems happy, because he's a good, happy kid and because he likes to lift and eat. He's also a Freshman who got a little bit of experience last year. Van Brill is a 6th year senior. His schedule has been very tough. He's going to be an animal at 141 next year. I'm enjoying his season. I'd guess if Jason Nolf was unleashed his redshirt Freshman year at 165 (or 74), he would've been less dominant.

My only minor critique is knowing he needed a TD in the last period he needed to be more aggressive. Of course that is easy for me to say sitting on my couch and not just wrestled 11 and a half mins against a very good opponent (if my math is correct). I think he had bad calls go against him that cost him the match

It is easy to critique, and I am sure he is even tougher on himself.

That is going to to be the problem with 1-2 point matches. He his going to beat some very good kids, but it also opens the door for him to lose to a kid not as good as him. Have to get out on bottom, it cost him and negron their matches.

Agree. Learning experiences though for both. The goal is to peak in March, not January.

I appreciate the comments about patience, faith, building to March, easier said and done, etc.

I typically shake my head when I read comments about guys needing to do this or that. Go get a takedown. Get out from bottom. It ain’t easy, and we’ve been spoiled by the fact that our guys often make it look so damn easy. It’s also funny to hear guys like me, many years past their prime, state things as if we could pull them off ourselves.

That said, I am undefeated since my senior year of high school when I went 3-13. Can you believe it? I haven’t lost a match in 30 years! Not even Cael Sanderson can say that. I’m also an undefeated NFL coach, pretty much always making the perfect calls from my couch.

Great sense of perspective!

Beau was definitely not the more aggressive.

Not including the final thirty seconds, the two wrestlers were in the neutral position for a total of 7 minutes and 24 seconds. During that time Van Brill took five legitimate shots, getting to the leg twice, and two half shots. Beau took a total of two shots, one resulting in the first period takedown. Two shots in 7:24!!!

He is very good in scrambles but doesn't force the action to get into more of them.

How does anyone really know that he is a "natural" 141 pounder? I keep hearing it, but he certainly doesn't agree.
I heard some interview where he said his walking around weight is in the low 150's and is one good workout away from making weight pretty much whenever. I know PSU usually doesn't have guys try and cut a ton, but I would venture to guess most college wrestlers need more than 1 good workout to make weight.

He keeps getting better in my book. He doesn't want to get caught underneath so he doesn't just take shots. Sunday he took a good shot when he saw the opening and got 2. There wasn't many openings after that. Granted you can continue to try and create them. I think he was challenged to get off of the bottom and would have still taken if given another chance. He is good and going to get better!

When beau hits 141 next year watch out! You can tell he’s just a little too short and stocky for 149 which is causing him to not shoot or be as aggressive as he is naturally. When he’s back to 141 next year we will see a point scoring machine - you heard it here first!!

I feel like guys who go after it go after it all the time. It is hard to get guys to be super aggressive if that is not their nature. Hall and Cenzo both had about a 65% bonus rate on their wins while Nick Lee is at 77%. I don't think that Lee is better than either of those guys but he is a little more dogged in his approach. RBY is less than 50%. With his speed, quickness and quality you would think it much higher.

Even though most feel BB is not at his ideal weight, I would be surprised if he is a much different wrestler when it comes to scoring.

I understand where you are coming from but if you really watch Bartlett he wants to get after it but just isn’t big enough to finish at this weight. When guys are closer to his height he’ll be much better.
