Said several players who entered the portal asked if they could play on the bowl. Said it was a hard “no”.

Glad to hear it. Needs to establish that playing here is a privilege.

The story I read said "a couple" of players. Anyhow, the coach did the correct thing on this. I'm proud of him, and a little surprised. They place such a strong emphasis on homelike culture down there that I wouldn't have been surprised by a more accommodating position. I'm glad to know he has his limits, and this one is entirely appropriate.

I haven't heard, but should we also assume this means that if a player skipped out on the bowl, this staff is not allowing said player to travel with the team and be on the sideline during the bowl game? Regardless what you think about the bowl skippers, Muschamp's decision to allow them to remain part of the team was most perplexing and allowed the entire team to be infected with the "this game doesn't matter" mentality.

You let a player come in and play in a bowl game over players that have been on the team and busting their *** all year and you will have an infection that would rival covid on your team.
Players can’t come in and play a bowl game.

Beamer is talking about players, like Bell, that entered the portal but wanted to play the bowl game. This isn’t about players that transferred in. This is about players transferring out.

I heard something wise recently in this age of bowl games with many missing players. The outcome of a bowl game matters much less than the additional practices with next year's players. I'm not going to expect much from USC tomorrow. The last two wins were sufficient. If we win, bonus!

I agree the practices are valuable, but as long as the voters in the polls base the final rankings on the bowl results, I would argue that the outcomes of the bowls do matter. These games literally matter to EVERYONE involved in college football except the players that skip them. SC is ranked 19th now. I'm hoping we get a win tomorrow and crack the top 15 in the final rankings.

Yeah, didn't say bowls don't matter. But our last two games are more indicative of our trajectory than a bowl played with a different cast, on both teams. If you change out half your team before them, what do they mean to your progrum?

Separation cuts both ways and portal players need to know it. Glad Shane made a stand.
Can't say goodbye and attempt to keep one foot in the door!

Football is like most other things athletic: perceptions of you achievement are back-weighted and it's the last thing you did that people remember most, at least in the relative short haul. I'm talking about individual seasons here, not so much team legacies or players' careers.

I feel the trend is moving towards non-playoff bowl games meaning less and less. Of course I want wins. But given the last two games, I don't see how any GC fan could complain about a lackluster performance.

Oh, that this would bear meaningful fruit. https://www.si.com/college/2022/12/28/bowl-system-eyeing-sweeping-overhaul

I don't like the idea that laying an egg would be somehow OK. We are about to play the most storied, most observed program in all of college football. Falling on our faces would definitely NOT be acceptable.

Anyone surprised that Sabin gave his transfer portal players the option to play in the bowl? None tools him up on it.

Good. It would be distracting to have players on the team that don't want to be there practicing and playing. Most likely talking smack about the team to everyone behind the coaches backs. Hard no for me. I would be open if it was someone that has some family stuff going on where they need to transfer to get closer to home or something like that. Maybe someone that was going into their last year but is a bench warmer and has a chance to play at SC State or something like that I would say let him play. In other words maybe where it's a mutual decision. Certainly not a contributing player or a starter. They want gone. Good bye.
