Beamer explains offensive struggles against ODU defense

He said in his presser yesterday that the ODU defense greatly limits what a team is able to do on offense. He further said that he spoke about that going into the game, knowing we would be limited on offense because of the defense they run. I guess my question is, if the defense they run automatically limits what opposing offenses can do, why doesn’t everybody in football just run that defense so that nobody in college football can score many points? Obviously, I think if Georgia or Alabama played ODU, they would not feel limited on offense strictly because of the defense ODU was running.

He said: “The way they play defense makes it tough to do a lot of things. Just the structure of their defense. They take away a lot. This isn't a, 'They are Old Dominion. You should be able to do this.' They take away a lot with what they do schematically. It was going to be a challenge. I said that on the radio show last week. I said that leading up to it that the way they play defense is different and is a challenge.”

I’d rather him just say we weren’t prepared for some of the things they did or something along those lines other than saying we were just helpless to do anything because of their particular defense.

I just don’t understand how this is possible. Frankly, you have the whole preseason to prepare for that particular defense, and you can’t come up with anything? He said that he told people ahead of the game that their defense would take away some of the things we normally do, so it’s not like he didn’t know. But we didn’t prepare a game plan for it?

I've had the same question since I saw/heard this about the ODU defense before the game.

Coach-speak - they all do it, but it gets tiresome. Just be like Spurrier and say, "We weren't very good tonight. We did a bunch of stupid stuff, dropped a bunch of balls - didn't tackle well - just a sorry effort. But anyway, we'll coach 'em up and see if we can't be better next week." (Just a sample speech - not that those particular items were specific to the ODU game.)

This.

And as Stock pointed out, this magical defense they ran didn't severely limit other teams apparently. And most of their schedule was other Sunbelt teams.

If we'd played Georgia, then I would understand that comment about their defense. We played Old Dominion (lol).
Beamer anticipated your response, lol, and said we can’t just dismiss the offensive performance because it was ODU.

This is the most concerning thing I’ve heard so far. I did not hear his comments about their defense before the game, but isn’t it a giant red flag for the coach of an SEC team to say that they were fully aware of the defense that a Sunbelt team will be running, but we will not be able to counter it?

It’s not a good look for an SEC coach to portray helplessness against a Sunbelt team.

LOL, I want Beamer to succeed, but dang, he sounds more and more like a complete idiot. I am sorry, but that's just complete garbage.

"Their scheme was better than our scheme" is literally saying the same thing as, "That coach at the smaller school, with less talent, totally out-coached me."

How much are we paying Beamer?

Sometimes you hear this kind of excuse to explain why a P5 defense struggled against a G5 offense. Teams like Navy, Middle Tennessee State, and some others used to run a very effective triple-option style offense that P5 teams aren't used to seeing and often had a tough time adjusting to. It was an offensive scheme that somewhat neutralized the huge talent gap between the two teams.

But I have never heard of a G5 defensive scheme being so unusual as to throw off a well-functioning P5 offense. If there is a defensive scheme out there that can close a large talent gap, then everybody should be running it. Heck, we should absolutely be running it.

He goes to excessively great lengths to avoid saying anything that would appear to be critical of a position group or an individual player. I think that is probably some of what he is doing here. In his mind, it makes more sense to say that a Sunbelt team was running a defense we were totally incapable of scheming for than to say our players sucked.

There's probably a lot to this.

He's calling out the whole offense not a position or player. Isn't that worse?
If we can't scheme for ODU, we are in big trouble the rest of the season.

I can't remember if it was Beamer or some of the insiders on here previewing the matchup, but I remember hearing that the way their defense operates would be problematic for our offense.

Yeah, I underatand, just not sure i buy it. As stock pointed out, they had a weak defense last year, and against mostly Sunbelt teams.

An SEC team should bot have to outscheme a poor Sunbelt team.

Absolutely. Our talent alone should have been good enough to beat ODU emphatically.

But it's extremely concerning that our staff couldn't create a gameplan to put our players in position to overwhelm a Sun Belt defense, I don't care what their scheme is.

Right. It's the seeming assertion that we were helpless to even prepare for it. The fact that he apparently predicted it is even worse. If you got into the game and they broke some on defensive alignment they had never showed on tape and you were unprepared for, that's one one thing. Beamer makes $6 million/year. That's enough money to figure out a way to attack a Sunbelt defense.

Gotta wonder what Deone Walker is thinking after reading that we were hopeless to scheme against ODU’s D.

Not buying it. Beamer and even some on this board are giving ODU waaaay too much credit.

Well, there was a football guru on here explaining it to me. (Trust him, he plays Madden and he even asked some friends foe their opinion)

Anyway, apparently ODU's defense was really mean, and didn't just stand in front of the OL and allow them to push them out of the way. They were extra mean by sending in an extra player, to confuse the OL, which has apparently never been heard of before, and might be borderline cheating.

What I'm really hoping is that none of that leaks to the Kentucky staff. If they find out you can play anything other than a base defense? I shudder to think where it will end.

I would like to think it’s not true, but the optics are pretty bad for an SEC head coach to say that a Sunbelt team runs a defense they were wholly incapable of even scheming for.

Yes. The old school coaches would build up a weaker opponent in the pregame press conferences and then beat the crap out of them. Our coach almost loses to a weaker opponent and then gaslights us afterwards attempting to save face.

That is a sac of excuses to take the blame off of him and his sorry coaches! If that’s the case then every team we play just needs to run that defense to stop us and he just telegraphed that information to the rest of the college football cosches

I do believe that the players don’t suck but the coaches do! We are a talented team across the board but the coaches made us look stupid all afternoon Saturday!

I have been a strong advocate for Beamer and giving him time to succeed.
However, Beamer's lack of experience and growth as a coach is really starting to show.
An experienced coach would have chalked it up to first game jitters/inexperience and expressed that we can and will do better as coaches and team going forward and moved on to the next opponent. His comments have created doubt, confusion and lack of confidence surrounding the program and not a projection of strength, determination and strategic thinking.
I wonder if Frank has ''coached' him on his comments after the ODU game?

It looked like we were on to something on that first drive of the second half. Going for it on our 34 was gutsy. We should have had better plays called inside the 10 yard line of that drive. That was probably our best drive of the whole game. In a nutshell, I don't think our Offensive line is good and we have a very inexperienced QB.

Shane's comments and apparent attitude after this game have cemented my opinion that he is Dabo without the success. Like Dabo, he is thin skinned and feels like he always has to have the last word. Like Dabo, he tries to pump up a lackluster performance and struggling to win against what should be a very inferior opponent into a satisfying win against a tough opponent. Like Dabo, he is hyper emotional on the sideline, almost like he is compensating for his lack of actual coaching ability. Like Dabo, he is a cheerleader type.

Dabo has been able to get away with it because he has the wins to back up his talk. Shane doesn't have those wins.

I have defended him often, but that is one of the dumbest comments I have heard a P5 coach say.

I’d been more along the lines of “ODU played well on defense, give them credit. But, we were turning the reigns over to a freshmen, so we limited what we wanted to do to help him get comfortable.”

Even if it’s a dang lie!

It was Beamer. Some said it was coach speak as to not give the opponent any ammunition. I said he was already making excuses before the game was even played. Looks like I was right.
