Nice article....

"The father told his son: "I really like the people up at Penn State. I think I’m just going to spend the fall up there and watch their games and watch their practice and do that."

Paul Bryant Jr. replied, with a laugh: "OK, (Joe) Paterno will love that."

The relationship between the two schools had been so close for a long time. When we went there in 2010 the praise the fans media etc gave us was truly remarkable.
God I miss Joe. I recall Jeff Nelson told Mark Brennan thank god Joe took it out on him (Mark) because he was sure the Lady with the "back home in Alabama" was gonna get the wrath!! LOL..

I think i have told this before......but our factory (textiles) was located in Georgiana, Ala...whenever we would visit often we had PSU gear on...and we received so many comments about how the "Bear" talked about Paterno and said..."Joe runs a clean program the right way". To this day whenever i am out and about i usually have a PSU shirt on...it is amazing how many "We Are" comments i receive....and this is in Augusta, Ga! PS: Our sales manager was an OL for Alabama under Bear Bryant...mountain of a man!

Best fans in the world. Travel well, spend downtown, talk football, and actually act like it’s fun unlike our b10 ******* brethren.
I like Alabama fans also. But honestly if you’re kicking the piss out of 90% of the teams you play of course it’s fun. I would imagine that even the miserable people at OSU are happy 11 or 12 weeks a year.

That scene was one of many in a bad press conference scenario .

Obviously a great mind and man. RIP Bear. Beating us in the 1979 Sugar Bowl still hurts.

The gentlemen I've worked with in Alabama always had very nice things to say about Joe and PSU. Even after 2011, they were so supportive and gracious.

This stands in stark contrast to our conference peers, who took the opportunity to humiliate us, steal from us, and cheat us every chance they've had since those dark days.

This is a great post to show that in any organization, the most visible persons sets the tone for the culture.

There is a reason Bama fans and PSU fans have, over the years, gotten along. It goes right back to the top, and the culture and tone these men set.

Agree, except that the Big Ten began cheating Penn State on day one.

Imagine having Bear Bryant as an analyst… not that Joe would have listened to Bear any more than Bear would have listened to Joe.

Although Joe should have listened to the bear for sure
As paranoid as Joe was about his team, I am not sure he would have even let Bryant into practice - and most certainly not on Alabama game week.

Does anyone remember from the old board, a visit from a Kentucky fan who said he was going to be travelling through central PA and he wanted to know who he had to contact to be able to go watch a Penn State practice?

I distinctly remember that......that poor guy got such a response from the board, I am sure he was scarred for life.

I think I’ve told this story before on the old board, but myself and two other colleagues were on a business trip to Iowa one spring back in the 90’s. We have extra time before our flight in Iowa city so we decide to tour the campus. We happen across the practice field and there is an open gate where we can watch practice . we are doing so for 15 minutes until a GA comes over and asks us to to to the AD’s office to request a pass to watch practice. I’m 6’ and a muscular 230LBs, my companions were 6’ 2” and 6’ 4” both stout. Me and another guy are wearing Penn State polos. I wonder if they thought we were coaches or they run off everyone.

I remember it too . The individual was asked to keep walking when he stopped to watch from the sidewalk . The blinders were then put up around the practice field .

The kick in the head was Joe was never going to change the game plan from week to week , but as so many former players have said , you would never know the Joe Paterno on the practice field from the one you would see every day . He could become the ultimate bastard many said .
