Being Elite every year is near impossible

Now I know this is hard to take, but think of it like the red pill in the Matrix. You may want to live in a world not really there. Penn State is like a lot of power schools. Great fans, boosters, facilities, name brand, history, recruiting prowess, facilities, existing talent, ability to attract top names .

You have programs like Florida State, Tennessee, Nebraska, Michigan, USC, Texas, Florida, and now LSU that all can say the same. Yet they have gone through numerous coaches looking to be in the playoff chase every year. Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, Oklahoma, and Notre Dame have made it multiple times with only the top 3 actually winning. Oklahoma, and Notre Dame have been blown out Everytime.

Clemson is garbage this year. It's just near impossible to not take a step back. Penn State is close to Ohio State, much closer then any other B1G program the last decade. If you lose Franklin who is an elite recruiter, then you better get a homerun . If not you get into Florida State territory. Any Seminole fan will tell you they thought Jimbo Fisher leaving was a good thing because he is a great recruiter, but average GameDay coach. Look at them now.

If I have learned nothing else these past eight years it is that you cannot be just a great recruiter. You also need to be a good to great gameday coach and a good to great leader when you have a bad loss. I am not convinced that Coach Franklin is anything but a recruiter after almost eight years as the PS head coach.

I'd be happy being elite once a decade, and excellent 8 of the other 9 years.

We had generational talent on offense in '17 and lost 2 games.

True, but the OL certainly didn't have generational talent that year...as was evident this past weekend line play can be a great equalizer and can make an otherwise superior team (at other positions) prone to an upset. There is a reason why Alabama and OSU are rarely upset...because their lines enable them to win "ugly" even when players at other positions have an off game (as rare as that may be lol). As many great players as that PSU team had, I doubt anyone would make an assertion that the OL had comparable talent with the rest of the offensive positions.

I’d have to respectfully disagree Penn State is close to Ohio State.

Here are the records and a comparison with Michigan. Michigan ducked OSU last year from COVID so the official record will be followed by record if they played last year in ().

Penn St is 1-8 (soon to be 1-9) against Ohio State over the past decade.

Michigan is 1-8 (soon to be 1-9).

Penn State is 5-16 against OSU since 2000, 1-6 under Franklin.

Michigan is 3-17 (3-18) against OSU since 2000, 0-5 (0-6) under Harbaugh.

Penn St is only 2 games better than Michigan over that time frame.

Yes, PSU has played OSU better than anyone else in the Big Ten but that’s sort of like bragging about being the tallest midget. ;)

Yes, leading in moral victories doesn't get you very far.

Like it or not they happened but I went back to 2000 so it’s not heavily influenced by the sanction years. You want to remove 2012 to 2014 or so? Fine. That leaves Penn State at 5-13 against Ohio State. It doesn’t change the point.

I would change the title to being elite and doing it the RIGHT way with STUDENT athletes is impossible in 2021

why would you include those years, we were basically a IAA school. Think of the players on those team, you gonna tell them they sucked given the conditions they had to play under?

I didn’t tell anyone they “sucked”. My post was respectfully disagreeing with another who thought Penn State was close to Ohio State. I simply listed the record against each other going back 20 years.

At present, Penn State is as close to OSU as your prom queen is to Ms. America.
