remember seeing George/Destroyers on the intramural fieldsSaw George Thorogood (not sure he was accompanied by the Destroyers), but for some reason I think it was in a nearby room in Russell House and not the Spur. I may be wrong; things tended to be hazy in those days........
Definitely one I did see was John Kay, the lead singer and main thrust behind Steppenwolf. He was starting a comeback as a solo artist and the first half at least was his new stuff, which was pretty bad. Crowd was getting hostile, but he finally started playing Steppenwolf stuff and it turned out OK. felt bad for him, though. He really wanted to accent his new stuff.
Was that the group from the late 60's and 70's from Canterbury England? One of my favs.Remember a group called Caravan that was pretty good
Coldest beer in colayes, Golden Spur
yes it was - I remember it being quite a good showWas that the group from the late 60's and 70's from Canterbury England? One of my favs.
I was at the Hall and Oates show. Since I was working for a radio station at the time I had an invite for the after party. It was in a hotel room Hall and Oates stayed in the bathroom most of the time. They did eventually wander thru the party guests to say hello.Thermos Greenwood & the Colored People, The Killer Whales, Swimming Pool Q's at the Spur.
Ramsey Lewis, Grover Washington, Jr., Hall & Oates w/ Gary Wright at the Coliseum for free.
Jimmy Buffet on the intramural field for free.
This is from 1971. Sounds like the early 80's. The piano break is hauntingly beautiful.yes it was - I remember it being quite a good show
Hazey indeed. Swimming Pool Q's and I did see Thorogood. I thought he was at the Ball Room but again very Fuzzy. Yes- I had heard the Daryl Hall rivaled Nick Fleetwood in his ability to snuff down a white line or two. One Bio on Fleetwood indicated he literally, in bulk, snorted the equivalent of an Semi-truck bed.I was at the Hall and Oates show. I was there for Steve Martin's visit. I believe he performed two shows a day and had a two day engagement. I remember the empty pool incident also recall he led us in the streets to the Campus Club. I was already familiar with his comedy and attended every show.Steve Martin...came into the bar with the arrow thru the head playing his banjo. Got up on stage did his gig. Walked out into the courtyard playing his banjo. It was 2nd semester so the small pools were drained. We got in the pools and he crowd surfed on his back still playing the banjo
I couldn't read that part of your story without thinking of Rick Nelson's "Garden party". His new stuff got rebuffed also.Saw George Thorogood (not sure he was accompanied by the Destroyers), but for some reason I think it was in a nearby room in Russell House and not the Spur. Todd Rundgren and his band Utopia played for free at the Carolina Coliseum and he later went streaking on campus.

yeah 73-74...also the "The Streak" happened on a Sunday nite on Greene St. in front of The Russell House in 73. There was just enuff room on Greene St. for streakers to run shoulder to shoulder. There were streakers on the roof of the Russell House. What a time to be alive. I think SC was trying to break the record of the UNC streak.Ok guys I was at USC from 1978-1982.
Im assuming a lot of these concerts y'all are remembering like Linda Ronstadt/Jimmy Buffett/Hall n Oates were before 1978?
WOW!!! Thanks for the link and the memories. During my 20 years in Columbia, many locals claimed the Township was the best venue for sound/music in both Carolinas.
Was at Salkehatchie campus from 76 - 78. Visited friends at Preston practically every weekend. Many memories of concerts and listening to music in dorms enjoying the "high times" .I would guess that most of us old timers learned about music in the dorms. This, to me, was/is part of the college learning experience. We listened to SPEED LIMIT 35, in Five Points and The Drifters in Myrtle Beach. Behind the vail blocks of the Honeycombs (K Dorn) we smoked dope to the Doors, Hendricks & Joplin. A friend on the 5th Floor, forced me to go see Carlos Montoya at a free concert. MUSIC & LEARNING are good.and

You woke me up with Estill. My mom was born and raised 5 miles south of there.I believe we may have some common friends. Out of respect, I can not hint at names but, do you remember a sliced off Chevy Impala (No back seat or Trunk) but, otherwise you didn't realize? Owner was from Estill. Had several friends at Salkehatchie from Estill & Sycamore. Looney Tunes would be an excellent hint. Used to dove hunt on Thanksgiving Day ... dodging the eye in the shy.
