Saban doesn't think we're that far off: "But you know, really, they're not that far off. They weren't that far off last year. I know they were 5-7 or whatever but they had a couple of really close games that could've made a huge difference and they did have a ton of injuries. They are going to have a new quarterback but he is a talented guy and they've more depth in the offensive line than they have had in the past and they do have a lot of epxerience back on defense. They have some parts of their team that if it works then it could work out very well for them."

Not to rain on the parade, but Saban probably hasn't followed us over a prolonged period. For much of our history, we've never been that far off. We're always one or two "aw shucks" losses or one injury away.

I disagree with the Saban quote being the biggest reason, LOL, but I like the positive slant of your thread!

Imho Saban is in the media now and will probably say a lot of nice things about a lot of teams that may or may not come true.

The biggest reason for me is Sellers, having a true young dual threat QB, with great potential. If he is the playmaker I HOPE he can be, it will be fun to watch him develop.

Yes, just a little sarcasm. I am also stoked about Sellers and posted a thread defending that position as opposed to some who who say we should pump the brakes on him.

And, yeah, he's a media guy now. In this role, he's going to find positive things to say about most any team.

I disagree. Saban is best football coach ever for a reason. Everything that goes on in the conference that he coach in he knows about. He wouldn’t know about the depth we brought in and our injuries on the OL if he wasn’t in tune with our program.

I am speaking historically. He has not followed us closely for multiple decades

The issue I have is that Frank is a contemporary of Saban. We cannot know if Saban is just being kind to Frank's boy. Saban says we had a lot of close games. Yeah, one of them was with Jax State. What would the mood be if we had lost to them?

Excellent point. The focus is always on close games that didn't go your way. Maybe we were a few plays way from being 6-6 or 7-5, but we were likewise a few plays away from being 4-8 or 3-9 as well, had the Jax St and UK games gone the other way.

In fairness, isn't it often the case that a couple of close games is what separates "good" seasons from "bad" ones, no matter the expectations? A couple of close losses changes a 12-0 season to a 10-2 seasons, thus resulting in a "bad" season for Alabama. A couple of close losses turns a 10-2 season into an 8-4 season, resulting in a "bad" year for LSU. A couple of close losses turns an 8-4 season into a 6-6 one, resulting in a "bad" year for Auburn. And, of course, we all know that 7-5 at Carolina is very different than 5-7. Most unsuccessful seasons are only a couple of close games away from being successful.
