1) He said signed, not recruited. Russell signed with Mullen. He could have gone elsewhere, which leads to.....

2) Russell was looking around prior to signing with us. South Carolina was after him pretty hard, and Mullen had to seal the deal.

I mean, if you say Russell is at State because of Croom, but Croom is no longer here, then how does that make sense. He could have gone else where after Croom was pushed out.

Russell start looking around when crooms left and didn't it take Mullen a visit or two to get him to sign with us? I agree that crooms started recruiting him, but it was by no means a done deal after crooms left.</p>

any worse than what it was in his first 4 years (and that would have been true even if we were a CUSA school) BUT Mullen has not proven himself any better in that department in my book YET. I love Mullen as a QB coach but in the recruiting department SO FAR he has signed Russell who Croom would have signed anyway and he is evidently going to sign Favre who Croom likely COULD have signed if he had wanted because it certainly doesn't look like Farve is likely to get another SEC offer. I'm still a little stunned with the pedigree that Mullen has with QBs that we couldn't get any of Newton, Brunetti, Nance or Mason. It looks like this year it will be Favre and possibly a second line JUCO QB. Here's hoping that Favre can translate some of his HS stats to the SEC even with his height deficiency.

Actually, his pedigree of recruiting top-notch QBs that are coveted by many include only Tebow and Brantley and to an extent Russell. I seriously doubt he would have gotten players of that caliber at Bowling Green or Utah. I also doubt anyone big time was after Josh Harris who he put in the NFL from Bowling Green and Alex Smith at Utah was only a 2 star coming out of high school who only had intrest from Louisville besides Utah. At MSU it will take several consecutive bowl games before we can start thinking of landing a 4 or 5 star every year. Until then, we'll have to coach-up what we get which, unlike Croom, Mullen has proven he can do.

Alabama was recruiting him, I don't think Tyler made a visit or anything, but they definately checked the situation out, and South Carolina did recruit him fairly hard because Woody McCorvey went there for at least a short period of time.

He was going to go to State regardless. He was upset a little when Croom was fired because apparently they had a good relationship, but Koenning patched that up. I still doubt he would have gone anywhere other than MSU unless we pulled our offer or something like that.
