And for those who don't know who Ethan Bright is, he is a 3B/pitcher for South Panola and is one of the top baseball prospects in the state next year. He is 6'5" 225, so he definately passes the eye test. Today, he commited to us per Swan lake. He has offers from Ole Miss and LSU as well.

I don't know if he is related to Josh Bright the Delta State QB, who also went to South Panola.

Also, I'm buying because his team mate David Renfroe is going to Ole Miss, assuming he doesn't go to MLB.

We need to keep these guys committing daily. Especially with them speaking of how they were interested in Ole Miss and had to tell them hell no.

Easley, Rea, Matt Lea. All these guys were big time recruits Bianco wanted.

Bianco relies on Memphis more than he does Mississippi. A state presence there would be more of a source of frustration for Bianco than a bunch of Mississippi recruits. With Bianco recruiting on such a national level (Our top signees this year are from Virginia, Georgia, Illinois, and Arizona), I think Cohen is going to hurt USM a lot more than Ole Miss. I think Cohen will sign a lot of national guys too, but USM relies on Mississippi kids, and its now that much harder to get them.

he also lost a few by not really trying- specifically Stephen Head, Brae Wright, Mark Holliman, and Zack Cozart. (Last two are from Memphis)

The excuses he gave us were: "I didn't know Head could pitch like that." (My thought was- well the Clarion-Ledger did, they named him Dandy Dozen, much less Ole Miss), and "We already have our SS of the future in Bunky Kateon."

I think what happened was when Polk first came back, he thought he was going up against Kessinger or circa late 80's Jake Gibbs. Once he saw that Bianco was legit, then you are right, we started to get some better Mississippi talent. Heck, I remember one year early in Polk's tenure, MSU had ZERO recruits from Mississippi.

I also agree about Ole Miss relying on Memphis a lot more. MSU used to get several players from the Memphis area a year, and lately it seems like we have almost abandoned the area. Maybe it was because Tennessee has a lottery and you have Lucky Day, or maybe Polk just conceded that area, I don't know. I've always said that U of Memphis having a good program would hurt you much more than us having a good coach. That's why I really wanted Memphis to hire Dan McDonnell, instead of that clown Shoenrock. That was one of the biggest coaching search feaux paux's in college baseball history.

As I said yesterday, this is a good pickup.

However, let's temper the "head to head recruiting battles" talk. Baseball is a different situation than football when it comes to recruiting. The big factor in baseball recruiting is "how much" is being offered. Most of you longtime college baseball followers know this.

Cohen put more on the table than Bianco in this situation (numbers being thrown around 45% OM vs 80% MSU). Bright is a smart kid and he took the offer. It may turn out to be a wise investment for Cohen. He feels Bright is worth a bigger investment than Bianco does. Time will tell.

But it is hard to say who bettered who when the offers are not the same in baseball. Most of the time, we don't know what exactly was offered.
