he also lost a few by not really trying- specifically Stephen Head, Brae Wright, Mark Holliman, and Zack Cozart. (Last two are from Memphis)
The excuses he gave us were: "I didn't know Head could pitch like that." (My thought was- well the Clarion-Ledger did, they named him Dandy Dozen, much less Ole Miss), and "We already have our SS of the future in Bunky Kateon."
I think what happened was when Polk first came back, he thought he was going up against Kessinger or circa late 80's Jake Gibbs. Once he saw that Bianco was legit, then you are right, we started to get some better Mississippi talent. Heck, I remember one year early in Polk's tenure, MSU had ZERO recruits from Mississippi.
I also agree about Ole Miss relying on Memphis a lot more. MSU used to get several players from the Memphis area a year, and lately it seems like we have almost abandoned the area. Maybe it was because Tennessee has a lottery and you have Lucky Day, or maybe Polk just conceded that area, I don't know. I've always said that U of Memphis having a good program would hurt you much more than us having a good coach. That's why I really wanted Memphis to hire Dan McDonnell, instead of that clown Shoenrock. That was one of the biggest coaching search feaux paux's in college baseball history.</p>
