There were some concerns at first, but he is starting to look pretty darn good.

Now the concern is if we can keep the guy.

His emphasis on growing the donor base, improving gameday, upgrading facilities, and holding people accountable all consistute a breath of fresh air at MSU. Now he has gone out and hired a top notch baseball coach that has gotten as close to a universal blessing as humanly possible. I've been hopeful since the day he was promoted. I've believed he would do great things since I heard him in Jackson a month ago. Now he is coming through. We better get what we can out of him because he won't be here in 5 years.

Young, good attitude, good interaction with the fanbase, cordial, intelligent, seems to be making good judgement so far.

Brains like we've never seen at the AD helm.

Glad he is running the show.

this was just another "Mississippi State promote from within" hire. And at least one who was ready to give up on him on Thursday because we weren't hearing about progress on the coaching search. Some of us tried to tell those guys. Seriously, Greg Byrne is exactly who MSU needs running the athletic dept right now, and hopefully for a long time.

He has passed the first test. He told several folks last week we'd love the hire and I assume he already knew and was working to make it happen. I am sure Polk will get over it and if he doesn't, then he is being shortsighted. He probably screwed Tommy up more than anything else.

Byrne at AD could have never happened without firing Larry Templeton.

Just sayin.

The hire of Cohen under such a massive pile of **** from Polk shows me he has the balls to make a decision based on facts rather than pressure from people with power at the university.

It's great. But the catalyst was Doc being hired. He got rid of LT. Who would have named Raffo coach in March. It has to be tearing his guts out to see this young punk uniting the fan base and knowing he would never of had the guts to do this.

While I like Greg Byrne, I think there are plenty others that would've been equally good. The firing of LT was the best move for MSU athletics in a long time, maybe ever.

I think we just lucked into this one. It was a "perfect storm" of Doc's getting hired, his firing Templeton, and then his hiring Byrne. Of course, Watson giving Byrne the authority to hire the next baseball coach was huge as well.

I guess this whole "storm" was just the gods finally smiling on Starkville after years of laughing.

Query which would be more ballsy: hiring Cohen or hiring Raffo. Everyone is praising Byrne for having the nuts to take on Polk, but the alternative was having the nuts to hack off at least 75% of the fan base. He made a good choice, but I also think it was the easy choice. He would've needed real brass to pass on Cohen.

I realize Byrne scares the crap out of 40% of the MSU fanbase because Byrne doesn't cling to the time-honored excuse "we're too poor to compete."

He also scares certain MSU fans because he bucked the trend of MSU establishment politics when he went against the wishes of one Ronald McGillicutty Polk & hired a real baseball coach instead of a political appointee (Raffo).

He also scares some of the sheep because he is dedicated to winning championships that are not regionally confined.

The time-honored MSU raps of "being competitive in the SEC" or "at least we beat Ole Miss this year" or "I'll pull out of the Bulldog Club if we play USM"...all that crap Byrne has tossed atop the compost heap.

Byrne is a 21st century internets guy who entered an athletic dept. (not counting the Croom hire) still stuck in 1975.

So, buy.

I never thought I would see the day when MSU hired a real AD after decades of watching the status quo bureaucrat Larry Templeton constantly water down MSU athletics.

..............to the old guard and the old conservative ways of conducting the business of MSU athletics. This is not only great for the baseball coaching hire, but for every other sport. I believe it means that Coach Croom and Coach Stansbury better stay on their toes. I don't think there'll be as much room for comfort as there was with LT.
