since football is a money making behemoth for Notre Dame compared to the other sports, but would the Big East try to get them to join up for football, since they're already in that conference for basketball and baseball?
I say they have to join a conference at some point, especially if they have a few more sub-par football seasons.

With the new deal, lowly Mississippi State will get 2x the TV money that Notre Dame is getting. Let that sink in.

They would make $Millions if the Big Ten added Notre Dame. Think of the East/West Lineup of teams:

East:

Pennsylvania State University
The Ohio State University
University of Michigan
Michigan State University
Indiana University
Purdue University

West:

University of Illinois
Northwestern University
University of Wisconsin
University of Minnesota
University of Iowa
Notre Dame University

I advocate Notre Dame in the West, because there are more patsy's there they can beat up, so they can return to prominence more quickly. I also think they should get a double dip share of both Bowl and TV contracts, because they have been used to sucking off the tit of college football for so long, they wouldn't know what to do without it. They should also get every basketball game televised, because they have Ben Hansbrough now, and his Daddy needs the TV screen time to satisfy his ego. I would also advocate expansion to 14 teams, adding Pittsburgh and Iowa State. Adding Iowa State would give Notre Dame another patsy, ensuring at least a 10 win season each year. Adding Pitt to the East, would give a natural rivalry game for Penn State, and another reason for Joe Pa to live another 10 years.

Best as I can tell from a very quick Google search, ND gets about $10M per year from NBC to broadcast 7 of its football games per year. On top of that you've got to add the money they get from other networks for their other 5 football games plus whatever they get from the Big East for basketball.

First of all, ND would be much more likely to join the Big East than the Big 11, although it does make more sense on paper for them to be in the Big 11.

I don't think that they would join a conference either as long as they are making tons off of their TV deal.

If they were to join a conference, I think it would be for a different reason- with the other major BCS conferences all going to 12 it seems, I think that there might be a possibility in the distasnt future that they have trouble scheduling enough decent teams to go to a BCS bowl.

Notre Dame's athletic dept. has averaged a surplus of over 16 mil a year for the last several years. In 2007, they refunded over 9 million dollars in ticket orders they couldn't seat. Good god, they had 15,000 watch the pep rally for the Michigan game ON-LINE...... I was there a few years back for the FSU game, we were off that weekend so I went up. Being a good southern boy, i had hated the irish since birth. After a trip up there, completely changed my attitude. It is an amazing trip for college football fans. Anyway, after reading the program and noting they had passed the 3 billion dollar mark in some endowment (yes 3 Billion, with a B), I realized they don't have alot more money than MSU, they have alot more money than the entire SEC. They began in 2007 with 68.5 million in athletic facility upgrades. This is a huge deal fro MSU and the SEC and I do think there are reasons why Notre Dame will eventually join a conference. But Finances will not ever be part of that decision.

Florida State made them look like a high school team, and they weren't exactly FSU circa 1999, either.

Under the new BCS arrangement Notre Dame will be guaranteed one of the at-large slots in a BCS bowl if it is ranked No. 8 or better in the final BCS Standings. It is also guaranteed annual payment for its participation in the BCS. In those seasons in which the Irish play in a BCS game, the school will receive $4.5 million (an amount equivalent that received by a conference that places a second team in a BCS bowl). In those seasons in which Notre Dame does not play in a BCS game, it is projected to be paid $1.3 million for its participation in the BCS arrangement.
They have no incentive to join a conference. They even get a "participation" check if they dont win any games. This is why I even pulled against ND in RUDY
