Ron Polk was wooed by m any large schools between 80 and 90.

I buy, and that is another reason to give him props. I bet after 85' he could have written his own ticket at LSU. Decided to stay with us.

......we probably could have gotten someone better. I wouldn't trade that era from '85-'97 for anything, but just sayin'.

We should have at least one National Title to our name right now.</p>

and then issue commentary. Hell, I don't know. I guess the commentary is once you awaken from said blank stare.

But, I don't see anything inconsistent between "Ron Polk could have gone to LSU" and "LSU had no regrets for hiring Bertman."

His other favorite retort is "Damn, just damn." That adds a lot to a conversation too.

that someone could actually post this

You mean other than this?...two guess whose record that is after 1985, and its not Ron Polk's

I am no good at explanations. So, let me try this again.

Just because Ron Polk could have gone to work for LSU doesn't mean whoever they hired instead couldn't do a good job.

If we offer Cohen and he turns us down, does that mean whoever else we might hire cannot do a good job?

at hiring people apparently.
See the whole object to hiring people is replace bad people with better people.
Its not to replace great people with worse people.

Ron Polk couldnt have had the LSU job, just like he couldnt have had the Texas job, or the Miami job or the OSU job or the Cal State Fulerton job for the same reason. They already had better coaches than Ron Polk.

See if Ron Polk was REALLY "all that", MSU would now be a premier program instead of a really nice second tier school with a nice atmosphere.

Oh by the way before you ask, here are the PREMIER programs

The original post said he could have gotten the LSU job after the 1985 season. You apparently read this as "in any year after 1985" because you combined the sentence above it that said "Ron Polk was wooed by many large schools between 80 and 90."

So take Polk's record leading up to 1985 and LSU's record leading up to 1985 and make your decision if he could have "written his ticket" to work there. (stats below) This could also all be a bad argument because LSU had a decent 85 season which was much improved over Bertman's first season and LSU may not have been looking to hire anyways. It could also be a bad argument because I don't believe the LSU job would have been considered better than the MSU job simply because Bertman hadn't won the championships yet and LSU wasn't considered a top program.

MSU BELOW:
<table class="wikitable"> <tbody> <tr> <td>1978</td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td>NCAA Regional</td> </tr> <tr> <td>1979</td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td>SEC Champions, SEC Tournament Champions, NCAA Regional, College World Series</td> </tr> <tr> <td>1980</td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> </tr> <tr> <td>1981</td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td>NCAA Regional, College World Series</td> </tr> <tr> <td>1982</td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> </tr> <tr> <td>1983</td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td>NCAA Regional</td> </tr> <tr> <td>1984</td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td>NCAA Regional</td> </tr> <tr> <td>1985</td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td>SEC Champions, SEC Tournament Champions, NCAA Regional, College World Series</td> </tr> </tbody> </table>

Buy.

Way back in 1992 (I know that the perameters were 80-90) Polk tried to resign, and the rumor was that he was going to go to Miami to replace Ron Fraser, who Polk had coached under for a brief period of time, and was a mentor to Polk.

If you believe the rumors, the Mayor of the LFL talked Ron into staying, which he did reluctantly, recruiting went down a little, and then he brought back McMahon to be his associate HC and brought in the #1 recruiting class for his last hurrah in 97. We all know the rest of the story.

was a better baseball coach in 1985 than Ron Polk. Ron Polk had been to multiple CWSs, finishing 3rd the previous year with several players that would become famous professional baseball players.

Looking back now you can obviously pick which coach is better and that had LSU had the decision between the two they obviously made the right choice. However, at the time noone knew Skip Bertman would win 5 national titles while Polk would soon slip into managing a second tier SEC program. There was no evidence at that time to support that notion.

is that he took what Polk built in the SEC and took it a step further in that he legitimized us a conference with teams that could compete for NC's.

I've always thought he was great at looking at what the rules and situation was in college baseball was and exploiting it. That's how he came up with Gorilla Ball. Once the NCAA did away with the loaded bats, Bertman was out of baseball in three years.</p>

In the 80s we were about as big-time as it gets in college baseball. And the other big-time schools all already had long-time ultra-successful coaches.
