Had this been discussed as a possibility?

LT's head is too far up Polk's/Croom's/Big Money donors/etc. ***(es) that he didn't notice the lackluster performance MSU baseball has displayed in the last two decades, besides the occasional timely conference tourney run. Every SEC program has caught/surpassed MSU baseball, so something needs to be done obviously. (<span style="font-style: italic;">For the record, I was against Polk returning to retire on-the-job from UGA</span>)

Enter new AD. Exit Polk. Coincidence?

Hmm...

I don't think it's a coincidence, but I do think this is Polk's decision, and here is my reasoning. I think he realizes with LT on the way out and Byrne on the way in that he needed to resign this season if he ever hoped to make Raffo his successor. Basically he resigned and spent the whole resignation letter recommending Raffo to replace him. I doubt LT makes the hire for the replacement, but he's basically put Byrne in a tough spot by retiring and then publicly endorsing one candidate. So he's leaving Byrne the option of saying no to the guy whose name is on the baseball stadium, or taking the easy way out and appeasing Polk to avoid the risk of alienating a lot of the GOBs with his first move on the job.

If Polk waits a year and retires after Byrne has already settled into office, it'd be much easier for Byrne to go outside for the hire. By doing it this way, I think Polk believes this is his best chance at getting Raffo the job.

he just didn't care.

Actually, knowing him he was probably happy because then he would have to deal with less traffic, the only people at the games would be uber-sheep, and no post season = don't have to spend money to send the team to Stanford.
