I have written on this site a few times that he was the first guy I have seen at State in a long time to have real HR power, like in the old days. He can hit 20+.

He and Nappi need to stay together in the lineup so they can protect each other. Worrying about strikeouts is so over rated. Strikeouts are situational just like any other part of hitting. It only matters when you strikeout, it is just an out most times. He also hits under pressure even when he was having some problems at the end of last year.

First I want to say I do not follow College Baseball as much as many that post here. I had posted a few weeks back that if Polk really wants to give Tommy the chance he should have done like Bob Knight when he announced his retirement and just walked away at that time. This way Tommy would have half a season to turn it around. I also figure that would happen in that the team would tend to gel as they get more comfortable with the situation. Coaches weakness has always been the reason it is great to play for him. There has to be veteran player leadership to inspire. So when a group of leaders leaves it takes some time for the new leaders to step up. That happens and the team plays better.

So if Tommy got a half season and they showed improvement, the new AD would have a more reasonable excuse to give him the reigns. Otherwise it is tough on the new guy to start his job with a Coach forced on him by the earlier administration. I understand that Polkie has probably promised the job to Tommy, and Tommy has turned down chances to leave based on that promise, just not sure if that was the best thing for Tommy or MSU.

I just don't see how the new AD doesn't go through a proper search. If that happens, it would be hard for the more inexperienced candidate to get the job. I did not play with Tommy, but I have gotten to know him and I like him alot. I think he would do a great job. I am just not sure if he has been given the best advice and is in a good position at this point.

Let's face it, you can hire a guy with what you think are great credentials and it might not work out. So Tommy could be the best choice. I just don't think Coach has put him in the best position.

what kind of a coach do you think MSU needs? Do you think some more laid back lack Raffo, or someone more fiery like a Bianco?

Also, your point about leadership was a great point because our captains are all pitchers, who are guys that aren't on the field all the time. We have no seniors on our team that are regulars, and I think that Polk was counting on Mitch Moreland to come back and be that senior leader. I remember how upset Polk was that the Rangers signed, which is kind of unusual for Polk. Of the guys that are position players, the guy who has the best chance to be a leader in my opinion was Brandon Turner, who has a chronic hamstring injury.

here's my unsolicited take: When you change coaches, you *usually should* change personalities. We've had the laid-back personality in Polk for years now, and we all see where that has us. With that in mind, I think we need, and must, go after more of a fire breather like Bianco, Cohen, etc. Breathing life back into the program is going to require someone who brings energy, fire, passion to the job in a visible, expressive manner. If we were on cruise control and winning like we expect to, then I think hiring another laid back type coach would be ok. But we aren't so we need the fire breather.

The best thing for MSU and for Tommy Raffo would have been for him to go be a head coach at a Jacksonville State or somewhere to get some head coaching experience.</p>
