Assuming we get Cam, anybody think it is possible he goes crazy in his first year and then jumps to the NFL. I have not seen this scenario discussed much on the boards. One of the concerns has been what happens to Russell..will he want to sit another 2 years or will he transfer? Maybe Cam goes pro after one year and TR starts 3...

a running QB in an option-run first offense couldn't possibly beat out a throwing QB? Relf showed he could play well enough to beat a 9 win team headed for the Cotton Bowl (altho over-rated)....he isnt going to get anything but better on his throwing...hell, he may even learn a couple more plays this offseason...

It's not far-fetched at all

let the best man win. I don't care if we sign Cam and Farve and this fall Farve turns out to be the best option for us. Whoever gives us the best shot to win is who I want to play. However if Cam plays well enough that he has the option to go pro after his JR year then that is great too. It means we probably had a very good year.

if Russell is the man that Mullen wouldn't change the offense to fit his strengths? Relf can not throw the ball consistently. I'm not sure that consistent passing can be coached into him.

Mullen has been saying that if knew Russell would have progressed as much as he did this year, he would have played him. So I completely disagree with Coach.

but until they go through Spring, we wont know which way its heading...

I still dont think we have the WR's to open it up too much passing-wise. Plus, if you look at Mullen's offense the last 4-5 years, it's run-first.

Example- in 2008, Fla had Percy Harvin and Louis Murphy in addition to others- 545 runs- 329 passes- passed 37.6% of the time with those people playing WR- and our WR's dont even remotely resemble Harvin and Murphy...so what makes you think we would pass it more?

come in for a series or two a game to work the option while Russel only gets garbage time (although I'm not sure what this gives us other than giving Newton a break and letting Newton avoid some hits), but I think if Newton actually went down, you'd see Russel taking the majority of snaps with a heavy, heavy dose of Relf. It's all second hand, but my understanding is that Relf just isn't going to have a complete playbook to work with. If that's true, I don't see him playing the majority of snaps except in games where the D just can't stop him from running the same 4 plays.

Newton fails miserably throwing the football, basically becoming another Relf and Russell shares the starting role because of his passing ability. From what I saw of Newtons highlights, he didn't look all that impressive throwing the football.

I know, you think anyone that thinks differently than you is naive and/or stupid. As you said, we will know more after spring practice.

he is a finalist for the Heisman, breaks all single season passing records for us(these 2 go together), and we win the SEC. Outside of that, zero chance. Neither of those is going to happen. If anything, because if we win the SEC everyone will talk about how the conference is having a down year.

Mullen ran the same offense he ran at Florida with Lee at QB most of the season. He didn't really adjust the offense to fit Lee's talents, he had Lee and to some extent Relf, run his offense. I don't see him changing that, and in fact everything he has done (recruiting a mobile Juco QB and recruiting a mobile HS Qb) show that he is going to stick with his offense, which is a run first offense, and the QB needs to be more than just mobile, he needs to be a running threat.

I have no idea if Russell can be that threat, he may be a better runner than Relf, so lets not this thread turn into a pissing match about how great Russell can be. From everything I have seen about Russell he looks like a pocket passer, and the fact that Mullen is going all out for Newton tells me that he doesn't want Russell starting the next two years.

I think Newton will more than prove he can throw it, but that could also be a possible scenario. But if you look atr the success we had on offense this season without being able to throw it very well, Newton doesnt have to do too much more to make our offense really good.
