I think he can and I was really impressed with the development of the team this year. They really need to formulate an offensive identity now that Clifford is gone and the remnants of delayed RPO game. I think Franklin made a understandable misjudgment years ago in constructing his roster/recruiting. I think when UM was down, he started thinking about building a defense that could stop OSU. Smaller D-linemen and smaller Linebackers that could cover receivers with an overemphasize on large numbers of Corners that were rangy. I think OSU(and much of college football) has followed a similar plan with roster development because the game has become so spread out and pass happy. A team like Michigan(and a burgeoning Illinois team) has really benefited from the influx of smaller more versatile defenders meant to defend the pass on opposing teams. What Michigan is doing now has become "uncool" but it makes a ton of sense considering the sizes of some of these defenses and what they were built to stop....and what they are not. The result? We have played OSU closer, maybe limited their passing attack, but we haven't really challenged them in years....and now Michigan has the formula to punch us in the mouth if we don't adjust some. Teams like Illinois, Michigan, and yes....Utah make us all nervous for a very particular reason. I don't blame Franklin, he was trying to keep with the trends, but its just so hard to defend teams like Purdue and OSU and then have to defend stylistically opposite teams that are smashing a FB into the line. You have to be able to take away one thing, very very few teams have the personnel take away both. Being able to run the ball and our increased production on offense should help either way.
