Can FSU be ranked in first poll of the season?

They started out preseason #10, but they are now 0-2 with losses to 2 unranked teams. Can an 0-2 team with losses to two unranked teams be ranked?

If not, it would be quite something for a top 10 team to go 0-2 and drop out of the top 25 by the first poll of the season.

Last night's loss was particularly gruesome. Losing on a last-second FG to an upstart Ga Tech was one thing. But BC absolutely dominated the line of scrimmage last night from start to finish, and by dominate I mean: BC rushed for 263 (5.1 ypc) yards and held FSU to 21 yards (1.6 ypc).

I would guess the Ga Tech loss would have dropped them to about 15/16. Last night's loss, as gruesome as it was (and with all eyes being on that game as the lone game of the day) should be enough to knock them out.

Illustrates why pre-season polls are completely stupid, particularly in this case. FSU was preseason #10 based completely on last year's team, even though this year's team is virtually an entirely new squad.
Agreed. Now I am curious to see how many teams can Miami jump to reach the top 10 given Clemson lost. To their credit though, Miami did play a quality opponent.

I stated this in another thread. Pre season polls are completely meaningless. They're great for entertainment but that is the extent of it.

Pretty much, yeah.

Unfortunately, there is often a team or two who starts out unranked and has a slow go of it climbing in the polls due to preseason perception, even though they are much better than anticipated.

Real polls should start around week 5 or 6.

That's about fair. I would say after everyone has played 2-3 conference games. Some teams start the season with 3 lightweights, so you don't find out anything about them until the 5th or 6th week.

I don't think UF qualifies as a "quality opponent". UF is living off of their reputation from the Spurrier/Meyer years. They haven't done much of anything in quite some time and Sunbelt Billy has been a total disaster.

Yeah, UF did not look very good at all, so I wouldn't put them in the quality opponent category either. Ga Tech is certainly better than UF and BC most likely as well.

Just before the game most pundits were picking UF to win close, if UF wins the "SEC dominance" chant continues.
I'm filing this as Canes completely dominated an SEC opponent on their home field vs "Well, UF now blows so it doesn't really count as quality"

It'll certainly shake out as the season progresses, but that was not a game between 2 good teams.

Either Miami is REALLY REALLY good or UF is pretty bad.

UF is really bad. Miami is solid. That's my take at least.

I hear ya. What I was getting at is what would Miami have to do to jump a bunch of 1-0 teams ahead of them for an acc team to stay in the top ten. I'm not ready to call Uf a cupcake, but (without looking) I was assuming UF may have been a better matchup than the 1-0 teams above them had... at least most of them. Perhaps not tho

We won't really know who most of these teams are until about week 4 or 5. Notre Dame and Texas A&M could both be great teams or they could both be on their way to disappointing seasons. Miami could be good and Florida bad or Florida could be good and Miami elite. USC could be great for beating a very good LSU team or LSU could be on their way to a 7-5 season. Who knows at this point? Teams change rapidly with the portal.

The only thing we can feel pretty confident about is that ODU probably isn't going to the the G5 selection to the college football playoff.

Well looky looky. Miami jumps up 7 spots. AP cant have the top ACC school anywhere below being relevant. Didnt quite get to the top 10 but at #12, they'll be in next week. Top 10 would have looked a little to biased I guess.
