Can we put ODU away by halftime

In a perfect world, we would, but we know how we roll. I can see us carrying them for a half then putting it away after halftime. We haven't had a game under Beamer where we simply blew anyone's doors off before the half. We've had 2 games with very comfortable halftime leads (EIU and SC State, 29-0 and 22-0, respectively). However, both of those teams sucked something awful (EIU was 1-10 that year and SC State was 3-8) so those leads look fairly decent, until you consider the level of the opponent. Otherwise halftime scores in our "creampuff" games were:
Troy: 17-7
Ga State: 12-7
Charlotte: 20-14
Furman: 27-14
Jacksonville State: 21-14

We simply haven't dominated even lesser opponents in the first half. In some of these games, we piled on points in the 2nd half to put it away to make it look better, but putting lesser teams away by the half has not been our M.O. I would be pleased as punch to see us have something like a 35-0 halftime lead with no turnovers and no punts. Don't see any way that happens, but if we only cover the spread in this one, I won't be very impressed. Nobody thinks we're going to be very good, so we need to do more than just cover the spread.

Moreover, we need to look good AND start good. I would love to see us come out and assert ourselves from the outset. But we've been notoriously slow-starters against lesser opponents. Our 29-0 halftime lead against EIU looks alright, but we had 2 punts and a turnover on downs in the first half. Our first drive against an abysmally bad team went 3-and-out with 6 yards. We only had 7 points on offense in the 2nd half. Otherwise:

--Against a woefully bad SC State, we had an interception our first drive and a punt on our 2nd drive.

--We opened with 2 punts against Ga State.

--Against Troy our first 3 drives went FG, punt, punt.

--Opened with a missed FG and then had 2 first half punts against Furman.

--Against JSU, in the first half we went TD, punt, punt, TD, downs, punt, punt, TD.

Four seasons in, this is a trend. Not sure if it's coaching, lack of preparation, lack of focus or what. Ironically, our best first half offensive performance, by far, and there's not really a close 2nd, was against #5 Tennessee, with 5 TDs on 5 possessions.

Of course this all comes with the caveat that ODU isn't a total chump team and could beat us if we aren't careful.

Fair analysis. ODU reminds me a lot of Georgia State a couple years ago. I'd expect to see a relatively competitive first half but then pull away in the 2nd to win convincingly.

That would be...depressing.

It would be downright damning for Beamer's tenure if, in his 4th year, ODU is competitive with us for a half of football. I'm too realistic to expect that the game will be over by halftime, but we should be up convincingly.

First game of the season with a new QB and a lot of new faces at other positions too. I don't think it's damning at all. It's just football.

Look at Georgia last year against Ball State, where they didn't score any points until the 2nd quarter. Look at Tennessee last year against FCS Austin Peay, where the Vols only won 30-13 and were up 13-6 at halftime.

If Carolina loses this game it would be damning. If Carolina wins this game in a really close battle to the wire, that would be damning. But having a competitive first half, considering all the other circumstances, is not damning.

Difference is, though, everyone knew UGA and UT were better than those performances. That won't be the case with us.

We won't know that for a few more games. We should expect improvement as the team gains experience and the season plays out.

ODU is solid on rushing defense. They ranked #44 on rushing defense in 2023. James Henderson is one of the best linebackers in the country, and could be in the NFL or a top tier program, but elected to return to ODU. They lost another solid LB to Michigan State.

Where we could excel is passing the ball where they ranked #108 last year and lost all of their secondary. They have two good transfers who came in, but we should move the ball in the air if we can protect Sellers and give him some time.

ODU was 99th in passing offense, and #74 in rushing offense. I don't know how they won the games because statistically, they suck on offense. Their offensive line last year could not stop other teams from sacking the QB. Only one team was worse than ODU on giving up sacks. They have a fast moving offense where they get plays off fast. This should not be anything new to us, because we get the same thing from Tennessee. Our coaches will be ready for that.

This sets up similar to their opening game last year against Virginia Tech. They blasted music in their practices in preparation for VT last year, and did the same this week preparing for us. They lost to VT last year by 19.

We are by far a better team than ODU and should win this game by 3 TD's. Game should be in the 42-17 range, but first games of the year are always tricky. We were extremely weak at RB last year, offensive line was depleted by the end of the first game, had one reliable WR to throw to, and took our defense about 9 games to realize we were running the wrong defense. I think this is a much better overall team that has quality depth in many areas. Probably a rocky first quarter, and then settle in and slowly pull away.

biggest difference is depth and that goes for most power 5 teams playing lesser teams. not a great amount of them are blowouts by halftime.

It doesn't have to be a blowout, but if it's something on the order of a 15 point halftime lead, that'll be disappointing.

Only thing I disagree with is us giving up 17 points. That would be a HUGE disappointment.

We RARELY put *anybody* away by halftime! So, the smart money is on 'no'.

In true Gamecock fashion it'll probably something along the lines of 13-10 or 17-10.
