World number 1 accuses the guy who beat him of cheating. Elon Musk, anal beads, and more...

Wow, very weird. I would think it's impossible to cheat in an in-person match. I guess the hand signal thing could work but would seem to be obvious as a match wore on (and the anal beads? Just....no.). The obvious and easy solution is to have them play in person without an audience and just broadcast it with a delay. Like Carlson I'm sure these guys have better things to do.....

Yes. He became the engine. There are all kinds of issues. He is an admitted cheater too. Magnus might have been tipped off by Chess.com to all of Niemann's online cheating. They have a lot of evidence. It's a pretty interesting situation.

Is he saying the computer analysis of his moves were 100% correct every time?
Yes. The latest chess engines have an ELO score of about 3500. The highest human ELO ever was Carlson at about 2850. The difference in those scores is like an order of magnitude.

3500 beats 2850 98% of the time with a draw the outcome in the other 2%. Victory by the human is impossible.

When you see 100% perfection, you tend to think that an AI chess engine is involved.

The iffy part is whether playing a chess engine like football players study film is cheating. Could the opponent have a brilliant memory and just have gotten lucky in remembering the moves?

Do we have room for cheating in competitive bass fishing here? I mean - chess would be cooler to watch if they acted like this…

Cheating has been going on in fishing for years. So many different scams chasing the big prize money.

Wait - it's considered cheating to study or play computer chess simulations to get better?

It boggles my feeble noodle that studying and practicing could be considered cheating. Allen Iverson would love chess.

Studying and practicing with online aids is not considered cheating at all. In fact, it is critical part of study, analysis and preparation employed by virtually all serious players and professionals. The cheating issue is that such resources cannot be used during tournaments or rated games - either in person, over the board games or online games

It’s debated in the sport. I think that’s why this is hotly discussed now.

I guess I was confused by WestSide's comment that some think it is cheating.

For the record, count me among those who do not think using a chess engine to prep for an opponent is cheating. But I also don't play chess for a living and not that attuned to the nuances and ethical dilemmas present.

Now this is cheating. I'd not be able to focus on my chess while trying to get a peek of her chest.
