headline didn't mention the wall or door frame he also damaged.....It amazes me that people can't check their anger....
There's a link in the article to the KC station that published the story, and in it they have the actual police complaint. There is no mention of alcohol or any other substances.

What was he doing while causing the damage? I’m sure he didn’t just calmly pick up the vacuum, break it, tip his hat and depart. I could certainly see where the woman could feel like it was a threatening situation.Is there more to the story? Like did he threaten her? My first wife once inured her arm while biking. We went to a friend's party and she had her arm in a sling. Once at the party I announced "my dishwasher is broken". She literally kicked me right in the nuts. It was worth it for the laughs.

So there was once this guy named OJ, police did not arrest him despite multiple calls by his wife. Nichole, for varying degrees of DV. So this guy OJ at some point kills Nichole (allegedly) and it comes out that the police had refused to arrest OJ during these prior incidents. So legislatures wrote laws which require police officers to arrest a suspect if there is probable cause that he or she committed domestic violence (vandalizing their property is a form of violence). So that is how we get here, and how OJ is now playing golf in Florida.
That being said, if you find yourself in an argument with significant other and you feel the need to call her names, punch her, break items or punch a wall, you should probably seek some mental health counseling.

And that's the point of these laws, have law enforcement intervention early, rather than late. That way, hopefully you never get to the point the victim being killed. Yes it sucks to be arrested, but he will be out rather quickly.
I have no idea if he has a history. I would be shocked if this is the first time it ever happened for a variety of reasons based upon my experience in these matters.
Laws don't do **** if the people entrusted to enforce them ignore them. Then you get the double whammy of people being too scared to report a crime for fear of retaliation. Read the complaint there's no charge for threatening, etc, just minor property damage.
