This pause in educational endeavors will allow everyone associated with the university to concentrate on the recruitment of some high-quality interior defensive linemen.

I’m sure at least one “student” brought snow into his or her apartment to make that argument.
Brilliant, that one solitary genius is destined for greatness. A U.S. Senate seat, or dare I say the White House.

On second thought, perhaps we should temper our expectations. Although he/she/they/them/it may have the barefoot part down, walking uphill both ways through six feet of snow in a dorm room may unduly tax the spin capabilities of a future Presidential staff.

I remember having to get up early on a Saturday morning and trudge through a fresh 6"+ snowfall from Pollack Halls to the 'Tower of Babel" (Business Admin. Building) to attend a graduate course. That's just the way it was.
Yeah, I had an 8am Saturday Psychology class, missed one class and it cost me an A.

Think it was 1993, we got an extra 2 days of Spring Break because of a storm that had PA roads shut down. There was another day that had -40 wind chill and the Governor called the President and told him he had to cancel classes, so they canceled classes after 1pm after people had went to class in the morning.

Oh God am I that old story: When I was in first grade for reasons still unclear to me, we lived in St. Paul,Minn. It must have snowed 2 or 3 feet overnight, and my mother bundled me up in a bulky snowsuit and off I went on a three block hike to school. It wasn’t that bad as I remember, because all I did was follow the footsteps of the kids that preceded me. Today we would all be living in foster homes, because children’s services would have arrested our parents. I guess we were all too stupid to know any better.

In my 4 years at Penn State we never had a cancelation. We did do what they called "compressed schedule" where they shave an hour off the beginning and end of the day and shortened each class length. But I only recall that happening twice.

IIRC they cancelled classes for a day in either '84 or '85. It was right around St. Patricks day. It was a pretty big storm.

I blame the lawyers. PSU doesn't want to get sued for trip and falls. The rest of the town has shut down as well. Local school districts, coffee shops, restaurants, and wineries. YMCA classes cancelled.

Oh sure blame the Lawyers. The only profession in America working tirelessly, and selflessly I might add, to protect, defend and uphold the meager profits of Insurance companies from greedy individuals maimed and injured by dangerous instrumentalities.

You probably remember better than. I was at Hazelton campus in 84 so if they canceled classes at Main campus I would have missed it.

Either way it's a loooong time ago now and I could be misremembering...I just recall getting to class on some really snowy days

I thought I had read somewhere that over 50% of the staff at PSU - the ones that do all the support stuff around the University - travel at least 30 minutes to get to work. And most of them come from "over the mountain"....so I would imagine that the roads would not be in shape to get to the campus.

But, I am sure you guys all know better.

Of course, has anyone ever submitted a post on any subject on which we don’t know better?

“I might add…,” that was awesome.

Dedicated faculty sleep in their offices on campus, if they even sleep. This is why PSU is in FREE. FALL. o_O .

Total BS, I remember going to class in below zero cold and snow and seeing folks dressed in bulky heavy cold gear. Bunch of wimps.

It was last week of March in 1984, and an awful week for my family. My great grandmother passed away, and my parents decided to come up to PSU to pick me up to take me to the service two days later. They had a head-on collision outside Boalsburg, and Dad ended up in the ICU at Centre Community for a few days. Mom was stranded in my GF’s dorm for a couple days until Dad was in the clear. We never got to send off my great grandmother.

In my case, we had classes cancelled at noon on Friday. After three feet of snow! This was the Blizzard of 78. But that was it.

Yes, remember it well. As well as digging out my buried car in Parking Lot 83 on Sunday with a cafeteria tray.

Walking to 1st period class that morning from Snyder Hall to Willard was not fun on unshoveled walks. I believe you had the same experience Gilbert as I believed you lived in Snyder as well at the time. Once my 1st through 3rd period classes were over (had no afternoon classes) then they call off the rest of the day. It figures.

Yeah, I was in Snyder my two years at UP (5 terms actually, as Spring 1978 was in Cologne). That was the winter, as I recall, a co-ed died when she backed her car into a snow drift in Parking Lot 80 and was overcome by carbon monoxide while warming it up. I was at the Nutrition Library (my work-study job) when they called it.

Yeah as mentioned 84 - I had no problem walking to the bars that day but no classes!
