One BWI contributor said it should be Clifford’s decision to return (and start) next year if he chooses - that he’s earned it. Agree or disagree?

He should not be guaranteed the starting position. Let me add that the 2nd team QB, whomever that may be needs increased reps in practice and PT in games early on. Enough of this lack of preparation.

I would like to see an open competition between Veilleux, Allar, and Pribula. Let Yurchich develop a QB from scratch and let’s go. Have to reinforce the OL to help them out. All receivers need to have a jugs gun at home during the summer to develop catching skills. IMO, it’s the way to move forward.

I think I'd rather see Christian Veilleux take over next year and provide a one or two year bridge for Allar. And I only say that because of the roster numbers and quality we're losing. Will be hard to replace all of that plus bring in a true freshman under center. Don't want to hurt the young kids confidence from day one.

Having said that, Kenny Picket really benefitted by coming back for one more - what seemed like his 8th season. What if something would just "click" for a healthy Cliff in 2022? Clifford over Veilleux? I don't think it's really going to matter next year.

No, it shouldn’t be his call. James Franklin gets paid 7 million/ year to run the program and make these decisions. If he feels he can get something better in portal, he needs to do it.
+1

Not to say whether I think Clifford in particular should come back but generally speaking it's the job of the head coach to have "the talk" with players who should move on.

It’s never the player’s decision anyway so what do we actually have to discuss here?

We’re discussing if it should be his decision as was stated by a BWI contributor on a recent podcast.

I suspect we may be talking about two different things: #1, whether it should be Clifford’s decision to come back (I say yeah), and, #2, whether it should be Clifford’s decision to start (I say no, playing time decisions belong with the coach). I was discussing #2, and it seems that some other posters upthread were too.

Depends on who else we have on the roster at QB. But I’m leaning to move on. Look at the Steelers with Ben.

Do kids taking a covid year count against the 85 scholarship limit?
I just answered my own question.

"Super seniors in 2022, 2023 and 2024 will still have the opportunity to use their extra year of eligibility. However, unlike this fall, they’ll count against their team’s 85-scholarship limit, restricting the number of players who will be welcomed back."

The scholarship grid says we have 89 kids eligible to return if NONE of the seniors come back. That means 5 underclassmen would have to leave early before we could add an additional recruit or portal transfer. I expect 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 WR, 1 OL, 1 LB, and 1 DB. Who knows but that guess is as good as any. That means no room for Clifford but room for 2 additional players. I doubt that Clifford wants to return anyway. He'll make a little money carrying a clipboard for a couple of years. I think Mustipher moves on too but PSU would make room for him if he wants to return. It sure would be nice to get Barham. He was an Oklahoma lean before Lincoln Riley left. Pry's departure probably doesn't help.

I interpreted the comment as #2 - he comes back, he’s starting.

Agree, behind a competent O-line if we can develope one in a year.
Yea I have mixed feeling on this but I'm leaning to no, time to move on. My fear is that if he comes back its his show and Franklin won't get any of the backups valuable playing time and we will be right back in this position in 2023. And thats assuming all 3 QB's stick if they hear he's coming back.
I kind of feel the same way about a portal QB. MY has the rest of this year and all next spring, summer and fall to get CV ready and winter, spring, summer and Fall to get Allar and Pribula up to speed.
I'm on the #newblood train.

If he wants to return, let him. But CJF should tell him that there will be an open competition for QB and Clifford will not be anointed as the starter. And if he is not performing well in games, he might be pulled for giving the backup a chance. This might make it less likely that he would want to come back. But I don’t see Franklin doing this.

Franklin could say that, but would anyone believe it? Clifford is tough and gave it his all, but I think it's time to move on.

Ha, ha. In what universe does that happen. That is why dude is a contributor and not a coach.

If SC returns, he will be the starter. That's not even a discussion point. I'm not defending it, but JF has shown that he sticks with his man until he is physically unable to perform.

I find it unusual that Roberson did enough in practice to be the #2 and fail miserably at Iowa and then isn't good enough to see snaps against Illinois. Then a month later, CV becomes the #2 and has a very good performance in 3 quarters of play.

It's head scratching trying to analyze how our season was roughly a dozen snaps different from the record being as good as 11-1 or as bad as 4-8.
