I've got no problem with booing - maybe even heckling in some situations - but I'm not a fan of throwing things, be it water balloons, eggs or shoes.
Based on some of the articles, it is a 20 year tradition that spectators throw water balloons at participants. The end of the parade apparently ends with a water fight.
