Forgive my ignorance, but whats the deal with Cohen's buyout and July 1? Not trying to be an ***, but how does anyone know what is in Cohen's buyout?

to start construction on their new stadium. If they don't, he gets out his buyout. Or something like that. I think.

but unless they make an amazing amount of progress on their new stadium by July 1st, his buyout decreases by a few hundred thousand...

but the clause I've seen mentioned is that if they haven't made substantial progress towards a new stadium by July 1, his buyout is either reduced or eliminated. Of course, "substantial progress" is a fuzzy term. My guess is if we hire Cohen after July 1, the two sides would negotiate a reduced buyout rather than go to court over whether or not Kentucky had made "substantial progress."

While most of the talk about the July 1 deadline has been about a July 1, 2008 deadline, there was one article on a Kentucky Rivals/Scout that mentioned a July 1, 2009 deadline. I really hope that is wrong.

Another interesting component deals with John Cohen, the Kentucky coach. If he's State's guy - and if he wants to come to State - there is an incentive to wait until July 1 to hire him. Well, 600,000 incentives, in fact. He has a clause in his contract that negates the $600,000 buyout if no significant progress has been made by July 1 toward building a new ballpark or renovating the current one. And while there has been movement toward raising the cash to complete that project, I'm told that dirt could hardly be turned over by July 1. So keep that one in the back of your mind.
