"I was told that the coaching staff flew to College Station on Thursday to speak to a potential new coach. Whether that new coach is on the current Aggies staff or was on the former Aggies staff, I do not know. But suffice it to say that it is a field position where the Gamecocks currently have someone employed. Beamer is making sure he has a great prospect to replace a fired coach if – again, IF – he makes another move.”

Interesting. Surely the staff wouldn’t travel out there for a position coach. Cloninger notes that it’s for a coach currently still employed, so it’s not RB. Durkin still hanging out down there?? That would be YUGE!

I’m not saying that’s what’s going to happen. But it doesn’t make sense for the whole staff to go meet a potential TE coach, for example. Only makes sense for a bigger job.

I would say I would trust David Cloninger breaking some news. Dude works for the Post & Courier and has covered Carolina sports for 20 some odd years. He’s been pretty dang reliable…

Usually true, though it doesn't explicitly say he took the whole staff. That was my first read as well until I figured it would be kind of awkward if were taking the whole staff to interview a DC and was like "uhhh, Clayton, you're not going." I can see him taking a couple staff with him, as much as Beamer values fit with the culture of the program.

Cloninger has been around for years. He’s at the P&C. He’s a USC guy.

I can see Lembo going as the Associate HC. I know Beamer values his opinion beyond just special teams. What makes is weird is his reference to it being for a coach that is still employed. Makes me think it wasn’t the whole staff. This stuff happens all the time in corporations. I’ve been on a couple of interview teams. It’s a good way to get a read on a candidate from several POVs.

Might be a coach that will be departing on mutual terms or being moved to an off field position but hasn't been publicly announced. Only thing that would make sense. It would be very awkward if not.
