In a sport with severe scholarship limitations where most teams play 4 games per week and use a 3-man pitching rotation for their conference games, you make a team play their 4th game in just over 48 hours and use their #4 starter to decide who advances (and then win a game with their 5th starter if their #4 guy can pick up a win). It makes no sense at all. The postseason should be formatted into 3 rounds of best 2 of 3 series at the home of the higer seeded team to get to the 8 teams that make it to the CWS. I would schedule it Fri-Sat-Sun for round 1, then Tue-Wed-Thu for round 2, and Sat-Sun-Mon for round 3. But playing it over 3 weekends would be better than the way it's done now. Because now, it's almost like a single elimination tournament.

is that it would push the CWS NC round to the 4th of July. That would be a cool way to celebrate the 4th- with a NC.</p>

but in reality, this format rewards the team that wins its first 2 games so if you don't win your first 2 games, you should be at a disadvantage.

But you are right that the format completely changes the dynamic. For example, I don't think Michigan could've beaten Vandy 2 of 3 last year with their normal rotations. But in this format, once Michigan won once, they had the upper hand and got to face the back end of the Vandy rotation in games 2 and 3.

It's all about winning your first two games. This is why you don't pitch your ace against a #4 seed in game 1...

Not that I necessarily would be against changing to patdog's format, but I see nothing wrong with the current one.

it's something totally different to change the way the game is played the entire season for one weekend. And it's not like a team that loses game 1 in a best 2 of 3 series isn't put at a disadvantage. They're put at a big disadvantage because they have to win 2 straight while the game 1 winner has 2 chances to win 1 game. But at least it's a fair disadvantage. College baseball is the only sport I can think of where some of the least used players are the most important players in some of the biggest games in the postseason. Can you imagine if all BCS bowl teams had to use their backup quarterbacks? Or if only the lower ranked team had to use its backup quarterback? That makes about as much sense as making college baseball teams use their #4 and #5 starters in the regionals.

format either. It would force the committee to rank all the teams and you wouldn't get a situation where Miami gets Mizzou, Ole Miss and the BC ace (though it didn't bother them). Instead they would be rewarded with what is theoretically the least competitive run to Omaha. And it would only extend the everything a week.
