These players don't know the definition of commitment starting from high school. "Commits" decommitting. It's so hard to care about a team so much that the players themselves don't care about. With players like Wells, Bell, Edmonds, and Burch, etc. transferring with essentially a guaranteed starting role, it makes caring about this team feel so meaningless. I know it's "about the money" for some of these guys, but it's not like playing at Texas or Alabama guarantees you a higher draft status. We've had plenty of players drafted highly even when we were mediocre. I just don't see why I should emotionally or financially invest in a program that is simply a stepping stone for players who think they're better than us (this is aimed at Wells). We won't replace his talent. I think all of this NIL and portal BS is ruining the sport, and it's causing me to lose interest. I foresee many other fans losing interest in the coming years as players aren't loyal to the university and team we love. I just don't think I'll be watching college football next year. Honestly, I only watched 2 whole Carolina games this year. I used to have season tickets and invest, but it just seems so pointless. We don't have to agree and I know many of you don't, but I think eventually you

A sport that allows you to move from team to team annually pocketing money for nothing is not sustainable…..NFL is business that knows this.

I certainly see where you're coming from but at the end of the day, it's football / entertainment. When I was younger, I lived and died with every win or loss.

Today, I keep up and watch but I have more important things to invest my time and money. Sounds like you are in a similar boat.

I was thinking the same today. I am about over it. I stopped watching pro sports because it was all about the money...winning was secondary. College is now in that same exact position! I knew when players started sitting out bowl games after playing all year just to transfer, college sports would never be the same again!

But it was great when we were watching Ratt/Juice carve up Clem right?? We paid a lot for those two portal guys.

Yep! Can't argue with any of the points aforementioned. NIL and the transfer portal have ruined college sports for me. Women's college basketball is entertaining for now.....

Due to NIL and the transfer portal I have lost all respect and interest in watching college football.

Read a article last week NIL is costing teams between 8-9 mil per year. IMO most school's can't afford these prices plus upgrades / improvements to their faculties. Without the upgrades recruiting takes a big hit.

What is the solution? Not saying that I'm not disheartened, but I have been a Gamecock fan for so long, I can't imagine not watching!

Instead of giving up what are some solutions to the problem and is anybody willing to step up and set some rules and willing to come up with a plan to make the system we have a level playing field.

The first thing we need to do at Carolina is teach our freshmen what a commitment means!

Sit a year or two if you transfer. This will certainly curb the high end players transferring for NIL.

There is already a variation on this in place - you get one free transfer. After that you have to sit out a year, or be a graduate transfer. Seems the play is to get kids on the first transfer and then you have them for a couple of years. And really, better their last two years, than their first two.

Exactly, Juice is a grad transfer! I think that's a fair rule, maybe you have to be a junior before you transfer!

News flash players have never been attached to the school. Sure some do but most could care less. They were just bound by chains so you didn’t notice. I think what you’re wanting is kinda selfish when you look at it from a player perspective. Not a single one of you would stay in your current job making peanuts is some other company came along offering a million. It’s as simple as that. Some of this NIL money can set these kids up for life without the NFL.

I agree to a certain extent but make them sit ar least a year if they want to jump ship. There has to be a consequence to the player. Professional players are bound to teams even though they could leave for more money. Imagine an NFL where everyone was a free agent every year. Disaster.

We don’t care what’s best for the “kids.” This isn’t a non-profit charity. This is subsidized education, paid for by tax payers. NIL should be structured with non-compete clauses IF we’re gonna sit here and act like these “kids” are employees. Fine, you want to move on and make better money? Cool. But there needs to be protections for the employer too when you do that. What we’re seeing now is a chaotic free for all.

Right. If you want to draw analogies to the professional world, the most direct analogy is the NFL. They would NEVER put up with what's going in college football right now. Not least of which is tampering, which is rampant in college football. NFL hits that hard. It's one thing to give the player choices and options, but even in the NFL, the team has to have some control as well.

Exactly. It feels like the university and fans invest in these players who give little or nothing back to the university and fans. There's no penalty for transferring in and out, and we're wasting scholarships and slots for players who are immature and easily swayed to move to a different school where the "grass is greener". I hope Gilber Edmund has enjoyed riding the bench. I don't know how a bench player got NIL money anyway. Why would you pay a kid to do nothing but practice?

It was nice, but that was a blip. I mean honestly, if they hadn't crapped the bed at the end and tried to pass the ball, we lose that game. Ratt, at least, seems to have stayed to try to build something. He has the talent, and it's time for him to leave before he has a career ending injury behind our line. Wells on the other hand, obviously is only loyal to money. He would be a guaranteed starter here next year, and probably be a 1,000 yard receiver here. But whatver.

The solution would be going back to the way it was. Kids get a free college education to play a game. Maybe they get a stipend. This model is unsustainable. However, there's no going back. As Jeff Lebowski said, "how are you going to keep them on the farm once they've seen Karl Hungus?"

That's entirely not true. Dak was attached to this school. Doty was attached to this school. We have had many players over the years attached to this school. Of course some weren't, but it used to be that those were the outliers.

No it's not. Their education is paid for with GC Club money, not taxpayer money.

While I am interested in college sports, it's not as much as I used to have. Maybe it has to do with being older. The Muschamp era really dumped a bucket of water on that fire. The NIL/Portal situation is putting a fire hose of water on that flame.

You’re allowed one transfer to play immediately, then have to sit a year if do it again. That will curb it.
Unpopular take, but;

I'd prefer to see them sit for a year with any transfer EXCEPT for the event of a coaching change. Annnnnd, you get ONE transfer for the 5yr duration. Period. No lawsuits. No NCAA appeals. No crying from Coach Brown (Mack)........ That would drastically curb the current nonsense. But the poor, poor kids..... pft.

I like this truism immensely. There have to be reforms that re-establish stability, predictability, and relational continuity. We can't go on like this.

It's utterly absurd on the face of it. Can you imagine the NFL having a system where teams have no guarantee whatsoever of who will be on their roster from year-to-year? It so beyond the scope of rationality, not even the NFLPA would propose such a thing. Yet, the talking heads tell us how great the portal is for the sport.

Well, it's typical of progressive overkill. They want to sell everyone on the notion that a four-year commitment is oppressive, analogous to life without parole. That's the driving force behind the absurdity.

The eventual result will be empty stadiums across the land. When the masses realize the school they support is just an audition for the top 20 Schools in the Country year in and year out interest will fade. This catastrophe of a year was the result of the portal. Next year's catastrophe will be because the portal. Recruiting is meaningless now. A top rated guy doesn't play he leaves. A lesser recruited guy has a good year he leaves for greener pastures. This is the reason pro sports isn't set up on 1 year contracts.

I find that prediction plausible. If I wanted to patronize professional football, the nearest NFL stadium is closer to my house than Williams-Brice. They suck, but at least they aren't part of a chaotic "system".

That would presume, I think, the powers-that-be caring about empty stadiums at the feeder schools. As long as conferences are raking in dough and the bottom line is healthy, they won't care.

You are suggesting the NFL is not a chaotic system? If so, I agree. If you are talking the Panther's specifically, they certainly would fit in the chaotic system category.

I'm not even sure how the system pre-NIL and pre-portal was unfair to players. Best case scenario you're a great player and you go to the NFL and make lots of money. Worst-case scenario, even if you suck, you graduate with a 4-year degree debt free.

The system now has been developed to cater to 200 college players that may make it to the NFL. Fans and other players be damned. So much for the old college try.

If SC fields a team, I will watch and hope we win cause I love my school. But something is happening and maybe it’s my older age…..I find myself caring about the basketball and baseball teams more as it still seems somewhat more collegie😉

Appreciate the women’s team more than ever these days.

A simple solution to all the problems (that will never happen) is to make athletes be accepted to the school through regular admission channels before they can join a team or be awarded a scholarship. Require schools to admit any applicant who had grades and test scores equal to the lowest grades and test scores of any athlete admitted to the school. Athletes would be true "student athletes" and would have some connection/loyalty to the school since they chose to go there before they were on a team. Let them transfer without restriction as long as they met the same transfer requirements to their new school as every other student who wanted to transfer into that school.

Members of the marching band have to be admitted to Carolina before they can try out for the band and there are no restrictions on them as far as transferring to another school and being in that school's marching band. Students with academic scholarships have to be admitted to the university before they can get their scholarship and they are free to leave and transfer to any school they want.

I don't really see contracts fixing much. It's like a LOI. It's supposed to be binding, but what's a coach gonna do when a kid comes and says "I had a change of heart and I don't want to play here anymore"? It's not worth it to keep someone on the roster who doesn't want to be there.
