that Raffo is qualified. The man has no D-I HC experience. That should eliminate him from consideration for a job the caliber of the MSU HC position. All of the sheep who are so pro-Raffo just amaze me. Coach Polk has been inappropriate for campaigning so hard for Raffo. It is not his right to choose his successor. He is not bigger than MSU. Polk has not even produced consistently above mediocrity in decades, and more of the same should not be our goal. If it wasn't Ron Polk, he'd have never lasted this long at State. A flash-in-the-pan World series berth (we had a cup of coffee in Omaha at least) not withstanding.

I don't see an argument here. If I'm Greg Byrne, I'm telling Raffo he needs HC experience somewhere else. Then I'm calling Cohen to make the deal. And I mean no insult to Raffo. I hear only good things about him personally, but the MSU teams he has been an assistant coach for have not held a candle to the success we've enjoyed in the past and should be having now. Raffo needs more seasoning (preferably in a different system) and Coach Polk needs to retire. The rest needs to be settled by the AD. And we're lucky if we get Cohen back. He can get us back where we belong which is on top.

that there are PLENTY of d1 coaches coaching now with no previous head coaching experience at various powerhouses such as duke, washington, washington state, missouri, and nebraska

that hire. I know you aren't arguing the point. But, I'm not sure it has been said. Hiring a coach with winning head coaching experience is about hiring someone who has better odds of succeeding? I mean, what else are you supposed to base a hire on? "We had a great conversation during the interview, and we are convinced he can win here." What the hell does that mean? He said what he knew you wanted to hear? Does it mean that he and the AD could have a great relationship?

You have to base the hire on history. Otherwise you are taking a chance, like we did when we made our football hire. In football, I think we are relegated to taking a chance. We are not in baseball.

When you hire an assistant, no matter how hot a commodity he/she may be at the time, you are taking a gamble. You have no idea how they would handle their own program. How many times has a team hired an assistant because they were blown away in an interview and be totally convince he/she was the next big thing only to have that coach totally flop?

Raffo might end up being a very good head coach, but we would be taking an unnecessary chance on him or any other assistant without first pursuing current successful head coaches. On top of that, Raffo hasn't exactly excelled in his current position. I can't remember the last team we had that could hit well consistently. Most of our success the past decade plus has been due to pitching. I can't even begin to wonder how many more games we would have won with a consistently good hitting ballclub to match with some of the pitching we have had.

Of those teams, only Missouri and Nebraska had winning conference records last year. And Nebraska's winning record was only 14-13.

because I just don't do that. But, if Gene's job is to preach the company line, why isn't he expounding on the value of a national search? Is he really openly advocating hiring Raffo? Seems like they would tell him to cool that **** until they (the AD) figure out what they are going to do.

...but Washington is usually pretty decent.

As an aside, they played at our regional in '97 and came in second place. They had an outfielder who almost single-handedly led them to the regional win. I can't remember his name, but he batted over .500 for the tournament and made some incredible plays in the outfield, if I remember correctly.

I agree, and MSU baseball should never have to hire anyone that isn't a proven head coach. Your football will have to take those kind of chances sometimes, but your baseball program should be able to be much more selective.

I'm guessing that they are friends at the very least, just because of the "Mary Ann is crying because people are bashing Raffo." comments a few years ago. This is one of the very few times that Gene is deviating from what the AD is saying, which is national search.

Also, to add my two cents, yes, Raffo may end up being a good coach, but because he has inexperience there are things that he will have to "learn on the job" that will cost us wins. Today was a good example when he didn't bunt in a situation that screamed bunt. It would be similar to when we first hired Stansbury in the 90's, except for the fact that Stans is a pretty good recruiter who could bring in some players like Timmy Bowers and Mario Austin to cover some of his mistakes.

I bet UK would try to hire their pitching coach Gene? Henderson if Cohen does indeed leave.

Raffo really needs to start somewhere like Louisiana-Monroe. If he started at MSU, I think it would probably ruin his career because he would be in over his head.
