extention because Ole Miss stepped up to the plate and hired a winner and we gave a raise that we couldnt even afford to try to keep up. They got a good coach and we are stuck with the Walrus. The jokes on us not Croom. He won the Liberty Bowl and got a contract extention and a raise to 1.7 million. WE ARE MISSISSIPP STATE!

I thought that seemed like a bit of a knee jerk reaction by you guys to immediately match exactly what we paid Nutt. Did his buyout increase as well?

not much more to say. I always thought this was a big defining decision for Byrne. He made the wrong one, but that's coming from hindsight. He definitely has the balls for the job. And we need that if we're ever going to make MSU successful in football.

not sure if LT had a "handshake" or "gentlemans" agreement or not with croom prior to Bryne taking over ....and byrne just honored what was going on before he took full control.....at least i hope that is the story

It would have destroyed recruiting to let your head coach walk into the last season of his deal without making some sort of decision one way or the other. After taking MSU to its first bowl game in seven years, he couldn't let him walk. So the only real decision came down to how much money he got on his extention. Although I whole-heartedly disagree that Croom deserves $1.7M per year for his pitiful track record, Ole Miss set the bar and I think that Byrne had no choice but to match. I understand that Nutt's in his first year of a new job, but Byrne would have been raked over the coals for for giving Croom anything less than equal pay. Maybe not by MSU fans, but he sure as hell would have hear it from the NAACP, ESPN, and pretty much every other newscaster in the county.

Byrne had to give him the raise because that is what stupidass LT recommended before he left...but we didnt have to extend Crooms. He had 2 years left, not 1. His contract ran through next season, and we extended him 2 more...

The smart move would have been to wait until after this season before doing any kind of extention...Now, we are going to have to buy out 2 years when we fire him after next year as opposed to none at all...But i think Byrne's hands were tied on this...

At least that new SEC TV money will be there for us to get it done and we can pay enough to get a good, proven coach,

To where ? This is and has been the only D1 head coaching job Croom will ever have. Most schools applaud being lucky some may even give a bonus for it but few ever reward a coach with contract extentions for being lucky(for one damn year no less) like we did.

If this was not the last season on his deal, there was no reason to go ahead with another extension. It was a fun season and going to the Liberty Bowl was fun as hell. However, there are a lot of schools that would fire a coach for doing that. Although I think Croom deserved a nice pat on the back and a couple coaching awards, going to Memphis wasn't exactly an accomplishment that would have gotten many guys a contract extention.

.....do have a need to show we're competitive. I think you make an excellent point about the contract extension. That shouldn't have happened. But hey, it's what we do.
