Crowning the "best" team?

The CFP is being bashed from all directions. Everyone has an idea of how it could be done better.
My question is, does March Madness determine the best team in MBB? Do the "best" 64 get invited? Does the CWS crown the "best?"
AND.. is there any way to determine who is superior? Better yet, does it really matter?

I think CWS does.... You're playing a series against each team.... Overall, you can't argue with that.... with one game eliminations, anyone can get beat on any given day if things don't go quite right.

I think we were the best team in the nation that one year the Tenn receiver made the crazy catch and they beat us with a FG.... we wouldn't have been beaten that year for a championship imo. But anyone can lose on any day....

And I don't think that anyone is complaining about the eventual national champions... They'll beat whoever they play to get "crowned".... I think the issue is making sure that the true "best" teams get the opportunity.

The difference is those sports have had a playoff format for as long as any of us can remember. And, due to the sheer volume of D1 college teams that play basketball and baseball, one can argue that an expansive playoff format is the best way to ensure that quality teams get a shot to prove themselves.

For most of my life, if you asked sports fans which college sport they are most passionate about, the most common answer by a mile has always been football. It's not even close on most campuses. But we've been told over the last couple of decades that it's somehow broken or deficient because it doesn't have the same method of crowning a national champion that these lesser sports have. At no point did the folks driving the bus stop to think that maybe they should be careful about fundamentally changing the greatest sport we have.
